Two questions- how do you deal with dressing for the cold outside then being in the subway where it's hot? I'm a sweaty mess everyday by the time I get to work.
Also , what do you do with your shoes? I have about a 10 minute walk then take two trains and have another 10 minute walk- I don't walk well in heels so I try to just wear them in the office. The problem is I am only in my office a couple days a month(so no storing shoes in a drawer to change into) I am always in different places all over the city. Do I just carry my shoes along with my laptop, purse, lunch, water , etc? I feel like a bag lady. Help me be a cool put together commuter.
Re: Commuters/ public transit takers
Layers and taking my coat off as soon as I get into the station seems to help. I also get on the train at the end of the line so I have some time to arrange myself before the train gets packed, so that helps.
Hmmmm. I just keep shoes under my desk. When I haven't been able to do that, yeah, I shoved them in my bag. It gets tricker when you're on the run all day and have to carry your outside shoes into a meeting or something, but I just carry a plastic bag for that.
Do you not have a dedicated space for your stuff at all? Or could you get some basic pumps in, say, black and neutral, that you'd never miss at home and just stash them somewhere for those days?
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
It may sound pretty lame, but you should totally look into getting a backpack. They can be pretty spacious and allow you to carry a lot of stuff without filling your hands/arms. You can also look into disposable hand warmers that you can keep warm with outside, then throw away on or before the subway.
Thanks for the tips- I get on a sardine packed train so no time to take anything off and then I'd have to hold it and with all the other stuff and being squished against people I'd rather not be squished against, I'm not sure that's an option. I did wear my heels home today to see if I could do it. OMG. never again.
and sadly moo, I dont have anywhere to stash stuff. I'm "not allowed" to leave anything where I am working (unless its my office) so whatever I bring in the mornning must leave with me in the afternoon.
I've looked/tried backpacks but havent found one that works for me yet... guess I will keep looking. and sweating on the train.
11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!

Ok. I took the bus to port authority from Hackensack then had to take 2-3 subways to get to work. It was a nightmare. I spent the bulk of my time trying to figure out how to disguise non corporate clothing and shoes as appropriate. I just never wore skirts/dresses so that eliminated the need for uncomfortable footwear. I wore like platform loafers all the time under pants.
I carried a big crossbody messenger bag that held all my stuff. I didn't bring a real handbag - just another small bag (with a crossbody strap too) big enough for money, phone, lipstick, powder, gum, and credit cards. That little bag fit in my messenger bag. I bought lunch most of the time. I kept water at work. Do you really need to carry water back and forth?
I realize this makes me sound oh so sexy. Maybe I'm not helping.
