Grand Cayman vs. San Juan vs. Curacao
Tell me more about these places. How are the beaches? Food? Attractions/things to do? What's the general vibe?
We've allotted 8 - 9 days for this trip and our main goal is a relaxing, romantic vacation to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We're not big into nightlife/partying, H is a history buff, our main goal is to relax on the beach but we'd like to have several days' worth of activities, also. We'd prefer a lush, tropical setting with amazing beaches and good snorkeling/scuba.
Is there another Caribbean island you prefer better?
Re: Grand Cayman vs. San Juan vs. Curacao
I'd pick Curacao. It has the best snorkeling/scuba, hands down. It also has great restaurants and lots of activies. DH and I spent a week there and thorouthly loved it.
The best beaches in Puerto Rico are on Vieques island. They're secluded and primative. So you trade off modern amenities with pristineness. Visiting the bioluminescent bay is a must. On the main island, San Juan offers history, while El Yunque has beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls.
My favorite part of Grand Cayman was stingray city. The snorkeling is just okay.
If budget is a concern, PR is the most affordable, and GC the most expensive.
I agree with Dana about curacao!! she got it perfet
PR is lovely but I LOVE and far prefer curacao to it.
haven't been to GC.
also-curacao is not tropical in the jungle sense. it's an arid desert island with no jungles. that doesn't mean there aren't trees or vegetation-there is, but it's not lush tropical jungle type.
i'd choose it hands down. dh and i spent 7 nigths there, rented a car and drove all over the island. it's super easy to get around on your own, tons to do, great restaurants etc..
PR is full of history but the beaches are just like a regular beach. We stayed in SJ so we did not get to Viques, but I have seen and heard good things. I loved SJ as DH is also a history guy.
GC is expensive. Sting ray city was awesome but it is packed with visitors and very commercialized.
I have never been to Curaco. Someday we will make it there!
I have a friend who loves Bonaire, never been but she said it has great diving and a very old school caribbean feel. Not too built up yet.
St. Lucia is awesome in that it has nice beaches quaint fishing villages and a tropical lush rainforest like atmosphere.
I just got a Fromers book and it gave so much info about every island
Good luck
