I may be looking at my first DNS Saturday.

I am really upset.

Last Friday I received an email that there is a training seminar Saturday morning that I am supposed to attend.  I have been trying to get in to speak to my boss about it all day but from a brief conversation with her this morning it may be mandatory for me to be there.

Why I don't think my attendance should be required is a long story that no one wants to read, but I'll be out the race fee, our room fee, my shot at Half Fanatics and DH's two vacation days.

  • I would be really upset too!

    Why such short notice?

  • That is massive suckage.

I would definitely pitch to my boss that I already had extensive, elaborate plans out of town that weekend and this short-notice training would be a major monkey wrench. I'd also ask if I could just see the meeting notes and schedule a make-up session, or review with Boss when you return.

Seriously, who schedules training on a SATURDAY so soon? What about all the other families with soccer practice, ski lift tickets and other things like nothing to be doing on a weekend?

  • Because the owner thinks that everyone eats, sleeps and breathes solely for their job here and if they want to keep that job they'll drop whatever to do what he says.

Then I'd offer the compromise that the owner can pay for your race fee, hotel room, and compensate your DH for his missed vacation days.

I'm waiting now to speak to my boss.

The other attendees are all salaried management/sales employees required to work Saturdays on a regular basis.  They are used to it.  I am the only hourly, administrative employee required to attend.  This is because the owner wants to move me into a management position, not offer it to me, just tell me how it is.  Except that I can't work the 60 hour weeks that would require.  I took an administrative job here 3 years ago because the hours allowed me to be home at a decent time, have weekends off and not have to worry about work interferring with my family responsibilities.

They don't understand that there are people out there that work to live, not live to work.  I enjoy my job and I do my very best while I am here and they are paying me, but this is not my life.  I work because I have to.

  • Oh boo, that is craptastic. I would be livid too. I hope you can work something out.

I think you should just tell your boss that while you'd normally be happy to attend this training (no matter how true that is) with this short notice it is just not possible, as you have a family obligation out of town.  You don't have to go into the whole race thing since most bosses don't seem to get why that's an excuse.  But bring up that you'll be put out considerably both financially and time-wise (your husband's vacation time) by cancelling this trip.

If they wanted you there, they should have told you weeks ago.

  • Major suckage!  I really hope you can work something out with your employer.  I'd pitch to them that if they require you there, they need to compensate for all your lost expenses, including DH's time off!

I am so grateful that my boss is an avid runner. My lab bench could be on fire and he'd tell me to go run instead of dealing with it.

  • Oh man, that really sucks :(
  • I hope it turns out okay for you friend - praying
  • I get to race!!

They have to postpone the training.

Also, they want me in the new position.  She said they are fully aware of my family responsibilities and do not expect me to work additional hours.
