Hotel recs/location for New Orleans

I will be going to NOLA for work and will be staying in hotel for a few days. However, I will be there a few extra days post-work with my H. We wanted something a little more "fun".

Generally speaking, we like boutique-style hotels, but really, any suggestions are welcome.

What hotels or areas would you recommend?

I would like to suggest not staying at the Clarion on Canal St.

We went last May and stayed at the Monteleone in the French Quarter and loved it. It was a great hotel, family owned, in a very convinient location, and has a great bar downstairs.

If you want a great hotel, check out The Windsor Court on Gravier Street. It's a gorgeous hotel and they have a "high tea" which is kind of fun. The rates are pretty high, but I think worth it.

We enjoyed our very cheap stay at the Renaissance Arts Hotel.

I wouldn't recommend the other hotels at which we've stayed.

There are two W Hotels (one in and and one near the French Quarter). I generally like the W. Those might be good places to stay.

Ditto the W! I stayed there for a week for a conference. I can't express how much I loved it. I've stayed at both W hotels and loved them both equally.

we've stayed at the following and they were all wonderful. I'd rec in this order:

Ritz Carlton

Royal Sonesta

Omni

Intercontinental

The RS is a quintessential NOLA hotel - really gorgeous architecture and tons of charm. It's smack in the middle of Bourbon, great location, but got noisy too. I love love love this city. Have a great time!

Place D'Armes- charming small hotel right by Jackson Square. Rooms are nothing special, but many have great balconies. Beautiful courtyard, with seating and pool.

As a local, I generally recommend that people not stay in the French Quarter, but close to it. My personal favorite hotel in NOLA is the International House on Camp Street. It's a boutique hotel that really embraces NOLA culture. And the house bar, Loa, is routinely rated as one of the best bars in the city. It's two blocks off Canal Street, close enough to the Quarter, but not in it, and still close enough to the Warehouse District Restaurants, and a block off the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line, if you want to head Uptown.

We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Sonesta in November. If we were to ever stay downtown again (we usually don't since DH is from NOLA), I'd probably try one of the hotels that PPs rec'd.
