BWLO/BWB: visitors

How long after LO was born did you accept visitors? (BWB: how long do you plan to wait?)

Re: BWLO/BWB: visitors

  • within the first week--family my CA family started flying in

my friends came at about 2-3 weeks--apparently I was really lax about the whole thing.

  • Do you mean overnight guest?  Or just people coming by the house for a few hours?

We had people come by the house the day after we got home from the hospital, so 4 days.  Not ideal.  I really just wanted to sleep.

As for overnight guests, I made MIL wait a little over a week after we got home from the hospital.  They stayed for almost a week.  It is the one and only time we'ver ever got into anything close to an argument.  She wanted to come on the day we left for the hospital.  Since that time, they have visited 2 more times for shorter periods (long weekend).

  • At the hospital or at home. Not overnight specifically, just visitors in general. I'm curious what the average is.

I didn't have any visitors at the hospital with Alex because we weren't at the same hospital. People didn't stop by until about 2 days after we all got home, so she was 6 days old at that point.

With Cori, she was born at 8PM, so the next morning we were open to visitors. In hindsight, it probably wasn't a good idea until we had figured out nursing, but I just wanted the visitors in the hospital experience.

This question was brought up by a comment made by BIL about visitors not being welcomed by them yet (son was born this morning). He said he wanted his mother to come by to watch the baby "so they could rest, but no other visitors as that would be wrong". MIL read the text she recieved while she was at our house today. I guess I got offended by visitors would be wrong statement.

  • We waited one week to allow any non-family visitors.

  • Natalie was born at 6 pm and we visited with immediate family that night.

We were open to visitors the next morning and that whole day.  We went home the next day so we didn't have any visitors that day.  People came to our house probably 2 days after we were home and we had a steady stream for a good 3 weeks.

  • Pretty darn sure family will start showing up right away.  I know we'll be exhausted, but I understand their excitement.

  • Jane was born in the middle of the night and my Mom was there at like 8AM.  I think she opened up Visiting Hours, lol.  We had my siblings and Jim's co-workers that day and the next in the Hospital.

Once we got home?  Hard to remember but I know M/FIL came down that weekend.  We saw my Mom everyday for at least 15 mins.  Most visits were family and were very short (except ILs who came for a whole weekend day).

  • We haven't "allowed" many and the ones that have come have just stopped by briefly to bring food. I'm being super protective due to their prematurity, NICU time, and it being flu season.
  • For both Abby and the twins we had tons of visitors in the hospital.  Abby was born at 4pm and we had several family members in the room by 8pm.  Then with the twins they were born at noon and I actually sent the babies ahead to my PP room without me and DH introduced them to my mom and gma and MIL.  We had some other visitors that night.  Then when we got home we had family visit right away.  I loved having people over so it didn't bother me.  People were good in that, if they had a cold they stayed away. Both times Nov and Jan were cold season, but eh, it turned out fine.
  • I am probably a "bah humbug" person when it comes to this. I never go to the hospital to visit people and I usually wait at least one, usually two weeks before going to visit the family. I just feel like its time for the family and not friends. Now it would be different if it was my best friend, but just friends....I don't want to intrude and I want the family to have time to adjust.

When this little guy arrives I really don't want us to have lots of visitors. I am fine with our immediate family visiting, but I just have no desire to have a stream of people in and out. At least for the first several days. I know people are excited, but I just want family time. So many of my coworkers go and visit each other in the hospital and I just don't feel like that's appropriate. They are coworkers and not my best friends. Okay, that's my piece and bah humbug. Maybe my opinion will change once I have a baby?

  • My brother and his family waited outside of the delivery room with SFIL.  MIL and my mom were in the delivery room.  We had people in and out all through the hospital stay.  When she was 2 week old, DH invited everyone in his 32 person family over for a mothers day party.  It wasn't my idea.  So, lots of visitors.
