Sound Off on CrossFit

Do any of you ladies currently attend a Cross Fit gym? I've seen it come up on the baords a few times, which is what initially drew me to the idea.

I was talking to my hairdresser and found that a small crossfit gym recently opened in our area. She was really encouraging and convincing in getting me to sign up. It's quite expensive though, and I am trying to convince DH that it is worth it, even if only for a few months so I can learn some new workouts and maybe get some home equipment after that or take my routine to the gym that we have access to for free.

I'm currently training for a half marathon that is three weeks away and thought I might switch to cross fit as a concentration after the race.

Re: Sound Off on CrossFit

  • Sounds cheesy, but CrossFit has changed my life.  I would always recommend trying it. . . however, you could get addicted to the atmosphere in the box and want to stick with it :)

There is generally some kind of "foundations" or introduction class to begin. . . generally 2-3 weeks.  It should give you a good idea of the basic movements.

  • I joined a crossfit gym two months ago and I adore it. I've been wanting to do it for a long time and the money was the only thing holding me up. I decided to sacrifice some things in our budget and just try it to see if I'd like it (I didn't have to commit beyond a month at a time). I am completely hooked. I love my coaches, I love the support of the other people at the gym when I work out and I love doing all these new things I've never done before.

When I asked about the expense, people on here likened it to group personal training. When you think about it that way, it's a like a bargain. Most of the time, there are about 4 people in my classes. Twice in the last two weeks, I've been the only one in class so it was two coaches and me. I'm very surprised at the strength gains that I've already made in just a short period of time.

    I say try it!

CF has changed my life so much for the better also. I have belonged to a local box for the past 4 months, and I definitely have OCD - Obsessive Crossfit Disorder (yes kinda cheesy, but it's true for me!) I go 3 days a week, plus free workouts on Saturday mornings that are slightly different from the weekly WODs, and I absolutely love it. It is the first workout I have done and actually looked forward to. The workouts are hard, but I love challenging myself and seeing what I can achieve. It has also been great for me socially because it gets me out of the house in the evenings instead of sitting on the couch watching hours of tv and I have met lots of awesome people in my classes. I have seen great improvements in strength, overall fitness, and just feeling good about myself. I pay a lot for my box ($150 a month for 3 days a week, plus free workouts on Saturday) but I also live in a HCOL area, and I think it is completely worth it.

  • I am a CrossFitter and it's fantastic.  I used to be a runner, but I find CrossFit so much more fun, and I feel like I'm stronger overall.  As a runner, I feel like I always had injuries and had to force myself to do it.  But now that I CF, I am eager to go and feel stronger than ever.  I've been sidelined for a few weeks with pregnancy stuff, and I've legitimately missed it!  I finally went back tonight and it felt amazing.

It's also an awesome network of people and a great support system overall.  If you don't turn up for a few days at my box, a coach will contact you to see what's up.  We have social events (they're throwing me a baby shower!) and do other fitness stuff like run 5Ks together.

Most boxes have a one week free trial, or at least a free trial class.  You and your DH should be able to try before you buy, so to speak.  It's awesome!

  • Another person who recommends trying it! I did it on my own with a group of friends before joining our box and I like it better this way. Being a member of the box keeps me accountable.

  • Thanks ladies! I went ahead and contacted the CrossFit gym about going in for my fundamentals classes, and in my inquiry explained that I have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) and that I have avoided heavy weights in the past because I was unsure of what my limitations were. The coach emailed me back and had done research into the disorder, had questions for how I was diagnosed, and even did research into people who currently CrossFit with the disorder, and said there were methods to restore a full range of motion. I am so excited by his determination and thoughtfulness already!

I am so excited to go in for fundamentals after the half. Thanks for the encouragement ladies!

This exactly. I was a distance runner (half and full) and I now prefer crossfitting to running any day. I actually do not want to do any more fulls b/c the running will take away from my CF. It has changed my life for the better and I would sacrifice anything in my budget and get a part time job to keep it.
