How to adjust training plan when sick?

I'm on Week 3 for my half marathon training plan (Hal Higdon Novice 2).  My lovely kids at school got me sick after sneezing, coughing, etc. for the past 2 months.  I was to run today (3 miles) but could barely walk in the door after work, let alone run.  I already called off work tomorrow, but would like to fit a run in tomorrow night (4 miles) if I'm feeling better.  If not, I'm going to scrap tomorrow, too.

For the rest of the week, I have a 3 mile run on Thursday and long run (6 miles) on Saturday.  Do I worry about making up the mileage that I missed today and possibly tomorrow?  Do I just skip the days and pick up with the training plan on Thursday?  I would switch my days around, but I have a late meeting on Wednesday and a bridal shower on Friday after work.

It seems silly, but I've never been sick during my training plans and I'm not quite sure what to do!

Re: How to adjust training plan when sick?

  • I would take tomorrow off as well. Training too hard too soon will set you back even more.

  • If you feel like you can't get out the door, that is your sign to go sit  on the couch. Let your body put its efforts into recovering from the illness. Taking a few days off will not derail your plans, and you won't lose fitness. What you will do if you run yourself down is risk getting sick and having to take more time off.

  • Listen to the PP's it's very wise advice!  Your early into your training so just get better so when your race comes around your 100%.

As far as your training just adjust the plan so you are back at increasing milage but not to much to fast, i.e. if it says to do a 7 mile long run do 5-6 and get back on track...
