Dutch Nesties! A Question about seeing the tulips.

I have some vacation time during the first week of May. Is this a good time to go the tulips? Will it be possible to stay in Amsterdam and take day trips to see them? Where is the best place to see the flowers?

TIA

Re: Dutch Nesties! A Question about seeing the tulips.

  • I am looking now and it seems that the hotels in Amsterdam are really expensive that week. Could you perhaps suggest a town that is close to Amsterdam and easy to get there by train. Maybe, it would be cheaper to stay outside of the city. Like in the suburbs. TIA

  • Hi! I'm more of a lurker on here and have only posted a few times but I love seeing the tulips so wanted to respond to you! My husband and I live in Leiden, which is about a 20 minute bus ride away from the tulip fields and a 20 min train ride away from Amsterdam. Last year, at least in Leiden (but I'm sure in other cities as well), they had special offers and a special bus that just went to the Keukenhof (the big flower/tulip park that is a must see). I believe from the Keukenhof you can rent bikes to ride through the nearby tulip fields (which I highly recommend, last year we rode our bikes from Leiden to the fields and it was amazing!) Here is the website for the Keukenhof, it might have more information. http://www.keukenhof.nl/ Hope that helps!

  • We're going to Amsterdam over Easter and we're staying in Haarlem. Its a 20 minute ride to Amsterdam on the train and 20 minute drive to Keukenhof. I've never been there, so I really don't know how it will be, but I think we'll enjoy it! Haarlem looks like a nice base for us.

  • We are also going Easter weekend -- hotels were pricey in Amsterdam so we booked a lovely apartment thru www.airbnb.com  I recommend it!
