Just married...nothing! bought for a home..moving in months..where do i start?!

Just got married in January of this year...i am still living at home (with my mom) right now to cut some costs while he is at ft sill...when he is all wrapped up there i get to join him for part of his ait and we will be sharing our first hom (or apartment) together! my dilemma is we have NOTHING...and i mean NOTHING. i don't want to move half-way across the country and not have anything! we also have a 20-month old daughter, and she is pretty much taken care of (crib, dresser, etc.) it is our stuff i'm concerned about! my question is this..where do i start?! what things should be my first priority in buying for a home?! obviously i am doing this all on my own since he isnt here and i am just at a loss! do i start with big things like furniture or wait on that until we are moved already? should i get anything at all?! ahh...the pleasures of being a young clueless wife

someone with some experience...help a sister out please & thank you!!

I wouldn't buy furniture until you've seen the place you'll move into. Sizes of rooms vary a lot and you don't want to buy a huge couch only for it not to fit. I would start buying things like dishes, pots & pans, bath towels, etc.

I'd wait until you found where you were living at to see what kind of furniture you'll need (sizes).

Why don't you set money aside every paycheck to save for what you need. I would not be buying things to just move them across the country.

I would wait to buy anything until after you move. If you're moving yourself then the less stuff you have the easier it will be. And if the military is moving you, it could take a while for your stuff to get there, so you're better off buying it when you move.

Not sure what branch you're associated with but there are some places on base that can help, I'm assuming you're Army? The Air Force has something called the airman's attic which has household things I think you can borrow or have? Not entirely sure how it works but in sure Army has something similar. Bases/posts generally also have furniture stores, I don't really know what they offer but I'd look there if I were you. And ditto pp, I'd wait until you get there and see your place before buying. Moving furniture is a pain and you could buy something that doesn't fit well in the space.

I agree with everyone else on waiting to buy furniture. Like Lace said pot/pans, dishes, and bath towels/rags you can not go wrong. Hangers, dish towels, can opener, knives, cooking spoons, and a coffee pot if you drink coffee. I was so thankful my mom made up a launry basket with all of this in it. I knew I needed all of that but it is so hard to remember it all on one trip to the store. We have been married and living here for five months and am still finding litte things we need. It takes time to get every little thing you will need. The Airmans Attic like Jilly said offers what they have for free for you to keep as long as you want or until you update you can donate it back to them. Hope that helped

Another thing you can do is put stuff on layaway. Get towels, sheets, dishes, silverware, glassware, basic curtains, etc...

I was in a similar situation because I had moved so much prior to getting married that I sold/donated a lot of my stuff that I actually ended up needing later. We got a lot of things from thrift stores and we'll replace them later when we have the $. Get the essentials and then budget for the larger purchases when you can afford them.

I was wondering the same thing.

OP, I wouldn't buy anything. If you are able to move to be with him for AIT, I still wouldn't buy anything. I would wait until you get to his first duty station to buy things, especially big items like furniture.
