I need a push - signing up for first 5k

My absolute favorite plantation is having its first 5k on March 25th. The final part of the race is down the center alley lined with oak trees. I want to do it so bad! But then all these doubts creep in. I injured my calf a few weeks back and have taken time off, it is feeling better now. I ordered new sneakers and they are coming in a week from today but I'm taking one more week off so I won't have to run in my old sneakers. I can do 2.5 miles on the treadmill and 1.5 outside (my last outside run was when I hurt my calf so I'm not sure if the short distance had something to do with it). I'm afraid I won't be ready when the race comes around and I'll have to walk or embarrass myself with my ridiculously slow pace? I run a 15 minute mile, what if I'm last? And will I even be ready by then? I'm freaking out. Someone tell me I'll never run a 5k until I sign up for one. And to stop being a baby.

  • You should totally do it!  Once you have the first one under your belt, then it makes it easier to sign up for more.   And my thought ....even if you are last (which you probably won't be) think of the people that didn't get off the couch that day!  Go for it!  You can do it!
  • I did my first at 240 pounds and only about four good weeks of training. I was slow, but I had a BLAST and it was the proudest moment of my life. If I can do it, anyone can! Do it!!!

  • Going into my first 5k I ran a 15 minute mile but managed to run faster than that during the run -- probably the excitement made me faster.  And I wasn't last, there were 5 runners that finished after me and a ton of walkers.

It was a great experience.  Do it!  :)

  • Do it!

If you can run 2.5 miles now, you can definitely finish the race.  Don't worry about your pace - as long as you can finish in the time limit then just go for it!

The final stretch of the race sounds amazing!

I saw this post and had to comment. I just signed up for my first 5k run ever. I have walked many but never ran. To be honest, I dont remember the last time I have ran a mile. If ever....

I am currently over weight and am not in the best shape. I am scared.

I have the same fears as well. What if I have to walk or what if I finish last.....You just have to get over it. You are doing an amazing thing for yourself and no one else. Only you. Get out there and do your best and be proud of what you accomplish. Even if you have to walk and even if you come in last. You are doing something to make yourself better and that is something to be proud of. This is what I have been telling myself repeatedly....and you know what, it helps. Good Luck!! You will do great!
