Help! I need airfare recommendations

DH and I have decided to take a trip to Europe this May (squee!) and we need to book our flights soon. I've been in an airplane only once in my life and my parents made all the accommodations so this is my first time having to price airfare. Does anyone know the secret to getting the best deal? Rates change back and forth hourly and I have no idea if we should be jumping on the current prices or if they're supposed to drop. The prices we have seen have been all over the place. Anyone know the secret to the best time to buy or have a website recommendation? What about travel agents? Are they worth the money? Anyone have experience with them? With the plethora of travel sites out there I figured the prices they might quote me would be about the same as what I could find on my own.

  • A good agent shouldn't charge you any money. They get paid by the companies to fill their rooms/seats. And most of the time, I've found just as good deals on my own (the only exception was flying from Japan to England).

Where are you flying into and out of? How many stops are you willing to make? I get emails from the airline I fly most frequently with (not that there's much choice in Canada), and they've already had their seat sales through April (at least)... So I'd buy soon, but again, our options are limited. FWIW, if I get tickets to London for less than 800$, I'm usually pretty excited.

  • We're flying from Asheville to Barcelona. I'm perfectly fine with multiple stops if it saves us money, and I'm even open to looking at nearby airports to fly out from if it would be worth it. The only thing we're trying to be mindful of in choosing our flights is that because we are cruising we do have some limitations as far as what times we can arrive and depart. Your comment about London gave me something to think about though so I know more of what's a good deal.

  • A Nestie on GP just got back from Barcelona.  I can ask her about prices, if you'd like.

  • Kayak.com is a great site to compare a ton of different airfare options. It's our first stop for domestic and international travel.

Also, you can set up price alerts through a site called Yapta and they will alert you if the price on your preferred trip goes down. I saved SO much money on a trip to Vegas that way last year (like 40%!)

  • I love Barcelona!!! I honeymooned there and this time last year I was there. I have rented a hotel and also an apartment there. I absolutely adore that city.

I second Kayak.com and Yapta. They are great sites to watch flights. It also can be cheaper to book flights midweek and fly out on a wednesday or Thursday.

I love Barcelona and you are not in Spain you are in Catalunya! If you have any questions  for anything at all let me know. :)

  • Oh if you are looking to stay in a hotel, when we booked our honeymoon it ended up being cheaper for us to book our hotel and airfare through priceline.com

Our last trip was a road trip through Spain ending with an apartment rental in BCN. It was very cool to have an apartment and your own "home away from home."

I swear by apartment rentals. It's my favourite way to travel.

  • Thanks for the input, everyone! Reba if you wouldn't mind asking on the GP board I'd greatly appreciate it. And eeeva I'd love to hear your recommendations for what to do/see while we're in the area! Unfortunately we only have two days there because we are actually taking a cruise out of that port. Obviously we're very limited on what we can fit in our itinerary, but it'd be nice to hear your take on what is most worth it to squeeze in our time there.

  • One other idea:  have you guys looked at any European only airlines? (Rick Steves has a list of the cheapies on his website).  Sometimes you can get a good deal from a major US city to London or Paris and then combine them with a super cheap flight to another European city.

Also, a word on customs:  don't forget that you will have to go through customs on your first stop out of the country, so be sure to leave extra time to make any connections.
