Tell me to woman up

I have badly impacted wisdom teeth. Like, they are completely sideways and are causing me occasional pain. They need to be cut out of my jaw. I haven't had this taken care of simply because we lacked insurance.

I now have insurance and a dental appointment today. I've kept up with cleanings every 6 months by going to the dental school and having them do my work, but nothing more. Today at my appointment, I'm going to ask about my wisdom teeth.

I am freaking SCARED out of my mind. Like, just thinking about them cutting teeth out of my jaw makes me break out in a sweat. Tell me to woman up and that it won't be that bad.

  • Yeah, you really do.

I've never had to go under for anything so I was freaked out as well. I've also never had a cavity so I've never been under the laughing gas either.

Let me say this. I felt NOTHING. The only pain I had was some aching a few days afterwards.

The laughing gas also had me confess to my dentist that I thought he was fuvking hot right before I was out like a light, so there's that.

They give you good meds after as well...

Just suck it up and do it! :)

  • I would think the temporary pain and discomfort of having them pulled will greatly outweight the long term effects of ongoing pain from keeping them.

FWIW, I had all four of mine pulled at the same time and it wasn't so bad.   Granted mine weren't impacted that deep and I did seem to fend pretty well with the swelling, or better than most folks, but it was just fine after a couple of days.

They give you really good meds and knock you out, so that part is a breeze.    It's the dry socket and having to have gauze in your mouth for a while that is the biggest pain, but again it's only temporary and for a couple of days.   Well worth a lifetime of pain free jaws, if you ask me!

  • It won't be that bad!  Think of it this way, if you are open about your fears, they'll have a chance to ease them with facts.  If you have it done now, you'll be in a little bit of pain for a little bit of time, and then you'll never have to deal with it again, plus, the anxiety you have associated with it will be gone with your wisdom teeth.  Win-win.

  • All four of mine were deep in the bone/nasal cavity. I was allergic to my pain meds and went without painkillers for 2 days of puking. Still totally worth it!

It will be no big deal for you!

  • Just think of all the great drugs you are going to get!

    You'll be fine, sweetie!

  • I was just as scared as you when I had to have mine pulled.  I waited until I could't open my mouth to speak, or eat.  But they put you under to pull/surgically remove them and then you have pain reliever for a couple of days.  I don't know about the others, but I slept for 2 days straight and then I was fine.  I didn't even need the gauze after the first couple of hours.  Not really a big deal, but I totally understand being scared.
  • WOMAN UP! Sorry - I had to.  I would definitely suggest getting them pulled.  I had mine out when I was 16.  I was fully awake and opted for only Novocaine.  If you choose to be awake my only advice is to bring your mp3 player.  My dentist suggested it and it worked wonders.  I was pretty nervous - so I completely understand the hesitation but its better to get them out now instead of dealing with the pain later. And like the other girls said - the meds are great!

  • When I think back on getting my wisdom teeth out, it isn't a bad memory at all. In fact, I remember it as a pleasant experience because of all the ice cream and laughing gas involved! Seriously, just get it done and you will be happy you did!
  • Thanks, everyone. Last night I was talking to DH about it and I was all "we live in CA now and it's so far away from MI...who will take care of meeeeee?"

DH gave me a strange look and said "um, I'm your husband. I can do it".

    Oh, yeah....I'm married! I have a slave...er, husband...to do things for me!

  • You'll be fine! All 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted as well. I chose not to be put under and it was perfectly ok. You can do this!
  • I had six wisdom teeth. My dentist said that part of my one tooth and root broke off into two extra pieces and they grew into full teeth and were impacted. I had 3 teeth where I should have had 2. I had all six taken out at once. Granted, I couldn't eat solid food for 3 months but I was no longer in pain and now I have straight teeth.

  • If you have to get them removed (which it sounds like you will), then you'll be fine!

I had my 4 wisdom teeth (2 were impacted) cut out in high school and it wasn't bad at all.  I was knocked out for the procedure and the recovery was fine too.  I was sore, but I didn't even use the pain killers they gave me -- just Tylenol.

It was the perfect excuse to eat ice cream for breakfast, watch TV, and sleep all day. :)
