Flights to Peru

We're thinking of going to Peru sometime this summer.  I've been looking at flights and right now they are close to $2000 per person.  Anyone have experience with good places to look for flights or if they are likely to get cheaper?  I was expecting more like $1000.

I've looked at LAN, TACA, and Expedia.

Re: Flights to Peru

  • My friend recently purchased tickets to Peru for her trip at the end of March. She is flying out of Seattle and the cheapest she could find was $1200. She is flying Delta with a layover in Atlanta. I would just keep checking every week or so and set up an alert from Kayak. Also, if possible, try to fly on Tuesday-Thursday as flights on those days are generally cheaper compared to Friday-Monday.
  • Flying to Peru is ridiculous expensive.  We flew ONE WAY in November for $1200 on LAN.  Put a travel alert out on sites and hope to catch it at a discount, or try Spirit Air, but know that most of the reason they are so cheap is that they nickle and dime you to death with other random charges so look into that before you purchase a ticket with them,.
We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

  • Is it possible to move your trip into the shoulder season rather than during the summer?  We're getting ready to book to Peru in October, and I'm finding R/T between the east coast and Lima for $1k each on LAN.  We were actually pretty shocked at how cheap it seemed.

  • Where are you flying from? Prices have just gone up - it used to be $900 on TACA/$1200 on LAN or AA to Chile and similar pricing to Peru (from SFO), and now you're hard pressed to find anything much under $1500 on the big airlines. TACA would not be my first choice for schedule, comfort and reputation reasons.

If it's closer to $2000 than $1500 I'd say it's particularly expensvie, so as PPs have said I'd set up a price alert on Kayak and wait to see if it goes down. That said, if you're trying to go during the Northern hemisphere summer months, there might just be enough demand to sustain higher prices, and flexible dates might be the answer.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'll set up some travel alerts and just hope for the best.

    We are flying from Cleveland.

My husband is a school teacher, so the summer is really the only time we can go.
