Does anyone use them for banking? I think DH got a credit card with them when he was younger to establish credit but we've never used them for anything else except for an auto loan. I'm considering switching b/c I'm not happy with our bank. The only thing I'm worried about is that they don't have physical locations. Does this bother anyone that uses them?
It seems like we can use a UPS store to deposit checks (not that we deposit many checks) and I still haven't figured out how to deposit cash. I think I can leave our old bank account open and just deposit it there and then transfer to the USAA account. I don't deposit things very often (our paychecks are through direct deposit) so I'm not too worried about it. I just thought I'd see what others thought.
Re: USAA Banking
I knew someone who used them and really liked them. I know you can mail checks to deposit. I know they refund the ATM fees for using other bank ATMs. I guess the best option would be to keep your current account for cash and transfer that way.
If our bank keeps cutting corners and getting rid of all the rewards I use, then I may think of switching too. (DH has their credit card and we use them for all our insurance)
If you do switch, let me know how it goes and how you like them. I would consider it too

We have considered switching too and have the same concerns you do. I believe I read you can take a pic of your check with our smartphone and deposit it that way, but we don't have smartphones so that doesn't help.
We use them for our car insurance and an auto loan and have been happy with the service for those.
ETA: This is where they talk about the mobile banking and how to qualify for it. You can also scan checks if you qualify.
I went ahead and set up a checking and savings and I'll switch over our direct deposits when we get our debit cards in the mail. I'll let you all know what I think.
They also take check deposits at UPS store locations apparently. I think I'm going to go the route of leaving our old bank open for cash deposits and it seems that depositing checks can be done a number of ways. They are sending me postage paid deposit slips so that I can mail checks I need to deposit and then I think like you guys said, the option to scan the check or take a picture of it (I need to read the qualifications for that).
They really have a lot of features that we are missing from our current bank. I feel like they nickel and dime us for everything. I'm loving the free ATM usage with USAA. Our current bank charges us to use their own freakin' ATMs. It's ridiculous.
Haven't used USAA but we're also very close to ditching our brick and mortar bank we've used forever in favor of Merrill Lynch where we have our investments. Like you though the hold-up so far has been figuring out how to deposit cash and how to 'cash' a check - - DH gets checks sometimes that we just cash instead of deposit.
I think PP suggestion of keeping a local acct open for just those reasons is the answer.
We do the majority of our banking through ING. We chose initially for savings accounts because they were offering higher interest rates than any of the banks around here. Then they started offering higher interest on their checking accounts, so we opened a checking account with them. Right now we're getting 0.85% on our checking account v. 0.65% with Capitol One (my old bank).
I know that ING has brick and mortar stores in the NY area, but not in our area so it is strictly online for us. So what we do is still keep our old bank accounts open with a minimum balance and use them to deposit checks or cash. Then we transfer the money to ING. It's pretty easy. I would definitely recommend them. If you want to sign up for ING, let me know and I think I can send you a link and you get a $25 bonus added to your account (if it is opened with $100 ore more).
We have USAA for our main bank and we love them! It does suck a little bit to not have an actual branch to go to, but they have taken care of most of those problems. It has already been mentioned, but you can deposit checks through your smart phone (and it shows up in your account minutes later!) and they refund any ATM fees up to a certain point (I cant remember what that is) each month.
We do have a local branch here that we use for a few things. The main reason we have that account is because I got it when I worked there before Marshall was born. We still have the accounts but I hate the fees that are associated with it...or the hoops you have to jump through to avoid them.
We could survive without a local branch, but I feel bad closing the account since I know everybody that works there!
First- Hello from Dubai, UAE ! Lots of websites are blocked here so I was just checking to see if the nest was blocked and I thought I'd comment.
As to your question we do exculsively. For cash we tend to just spend it and we deposit our checks with our phones. Everytime I go to the UPS store the clerk reminds me that they deposit there as well.
To qualify for mobile deposit you have to have or qualify for a credit card ( even prepaid).
Deposit and transfer works well too if its a lot of cash.
My favorite thing about USAA is that checks clear quicker. For instance, our paychecks always go in a full day sooner than our co-workers. This has never happened with any other bank but USAA. Not to mention their top- notch customer service. I've atctually had people stop me and have long conversations about how great their service is when they see my card
