Using a Verizon phone in Europe????

DH and I are going to Italy in July for two weeks.  We will have free wifi at most of our lodgings. I would like to have at least one phone in case of emergencies, but more so to take pictures and do research etc. while on the road. I called Verizon and they gave me the scoop on all the international rates, etc. which of course, are outrageous! (I somewhat expected this.) Does anyone know if they offer some sort of international deal that they don't tell you about?  I know there are international phone crds, which we will probably get, but I just wondered if there is any secret out there to using your phone affordably while over seas since I assume people probably do it all the time???

Re: Using a Verizon phone in Europe????

  • I'm surprised they didn't tell you about their global phone program, where you basically rent a global phone for the time you are away. http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/international/Global_Phone/index.html. It worked great for my husband and I for 2 weeks in Ireland. We only had it for emergencies and, thankfully, didn't have to use it very much!

  • I just put a local SIM card in my phone and pay local prepaid rates, but my phone is an unlocked GSM phone. Verizon works on a CDMA network and Europe is GSM. Unless you have one of their global phones (dual CDMA/GSM) your phone isn't going to work anyway. This is a good summary of all your options.

  • If you have an iPhone you could just leave it on airplane mode when you're out and still use it to take pictures, then try to find wifi when you can. And if you need to make calls for emergencies the rates aren't insane. It's what I did when I went to India.

yes and u can leave it on airplane mode and use wifi so you dont get stuck with roaming charges.

i have the 4S and couldn't get it to work in italy no matter what i did-i signed  up for the global whatever and had them hook it up. it still didnt' work. i was pissed.

i suggest that for emergencies you give the # for your hotel or their email address in addition to yours-and there's wifi all over the place.

  • We have iphone 4S and going to Italy.... so this sounds like it may not work.

I guess I just plan to take a prepaid card, as we will be moving from place to place continuously and then maybe take our camera, an ipad (to access the free wifi) and get a camera connection kit for the ipad to download pics to the internet.  I am guessing this may be our best option?

no go and buy a card THERE to call home, not a US card to call from italy to the US. you want a local or toll free # to call there.  since you have the 4s why would you need to bring your ipad and a camera connection kit etc... just so that you can download the pics to the internet? do that when you get home. that's just WAY too much stuff for only 2 weeks imo.  bring an extra memory card. imo yuo're totally overthinking this.

This is what I have done( although I have a droid).

I bought my two supposed international phones ( Verizon Blackberry Storm and World Edition) but they don't work unless you buy a SIM card from VZW). PLus Verizon charges a ridiculous amount (compared to local service- it was like $1.29 a minute to the local $.12) so we ended up getting local cheap phones and SIM cards at first. Then H found a deal on an unlocked older iphone from Ebay, had it shipped here and he uses that.

  • I am not sure how it works with phones other than the IPhone but I use the wireless option on the 4s.  You can download a text messaging system called whats up app.  You can text internationally for free and just use it in with wifi.

My sister (in UK) does this with her iPhone 4; essentially it's just a little ipad that she uses with free wifi and for texting when she has wifi

Is that the exact name of the app?  I can't seem to find it.

  • Thanks for all the help everyone.  I guess I will ponder the options.  I am contemplating the ipad because I am more interested in having occasional internet access than to make calls. Just need to reachable in case of an emergency I guess.
  • When we were in Italy in October, one of our hotel rooms had a free laptop available so we used Google Voice to call home for free.  Just a thought.

There is no way I would trust all my vacation pictures to just memory cards.  Way to many things can happen.  We download to something, or upload to something every night when we travel.

I generally bring a few with me-they're cheap enough. Too many things can happen to anything you travel with-money, clothes, wallet, atm cards etc...thre has to be a limit with how much stuff you haul for a 'just in case'.  if there will be a computer in each of the hotels she could always jsut plug in the camrea with a usb and transfer that way-but the ipad, the camera, the hook up thing etc.. is a ton of stuff to haul along in stead of a few little memory cards.

  • With the ipad you can either use skype or google talk.

With google talk, you can talk to your US numbers for free.

(Just go to your chat area, and use the "call phone" function)

    Boludos.
  • I'm pretty sure the app is called whatsapp

  • Did verizon tell you that they will ship you an international phone for free?I have done this several times. You call the day you leave to activate the phone. When you get back you do the same thing to activate your U.S. phone. I wouldnt worry too much. 2 weeks will fly by. Most hotels are going to have a computer for you to use, if you want to do quick bank check or email home.
