who Zumbas?

My BFF has been trying to talk me into going with her for awhile and Andy's friend was trying to convince me last night as well.

I said I'm afraid to look like a fool and they said that everyone starts at some point and no one will be looking at me.

Do you do it, do you like it? Have you tried it and not liked it? Any tips?

Re: who Zumbas?

  • I do and I love it!!! At first you do look silly but no one really is looking at you.

My tip is stand somewhere where you can see the instructor, a lot of times the new comers try to hide in the back and you can't see whats going on and then look silly and get frustrated

If you have a good instructor I think its easier to follow.

  • I do it, I like it.

It is more fun than just working out.

You will look silly at first, everyone does.  But it is really all levels at the place I go to, so when I see a 300lb person and a 75 yr old on either side of the room it helps me to feel less silly.

  • I love Zumba!

You do feel silly the first couple of times but really, no one is looking at you. Once you've gone to the same instructor a couple of times you will catch on to the steps. That's one tip, if you want to catch on, try and see the same instructor. Last year I was trying to find a class/instructor that I liked so I was trying them all out and realized that they all have different routines :)

  • I PPH Zumba!

I did it at the park district when I was in law school and then picked it up again in January when I found out the gym I belong to offers them. I love the class; the music is fun and different from what's on my ipod, it mixes things up instead of just being on the cardio machines all the time and I love dancing so even though it's more aerobics than dancing it gives me that little fix.

As everyone else has mentioned you will look silly at first, but it's not about going in there and looking like a professional zumba instructor or latin dancer on your first day. It's about going and having fun and getting a gooood workout. Go with your friend it makes it that much more fun. BFF and I have a standing date 2 times a week to go to Zumba together and the times we've ended up going alone, it's just not as fun.

I think this sums up Zumba pretty well...

  • I also love Zumba! I definitely agree that you should find a spot near the front where you can easily see the instructor.

You'll start to catch on because a lot of the moves are repeated. Even if you don't have all of the steps down, just keep moving!

  • BFF and Andy's friend said that this instructor is good because at the beginning she'll go through and say ok when I do *this* if you are a beginner you'll do that, if you're an intermediate you can do *this* and if youre an expert you can substitute *this*. So apparently its really geared for all levels at once.

They also said that she rotates rows so that everyone can see the instructor and doesnt feel "spotlighted"

This particular instructor teaches at various venues. They suggested that I go to the one at the local Lodge to start because there are a lot of older people who go and its slower paced.

I'm just nervous. What if I totally suck? haha.

  • Oh and Shelby said that this instructor offers "toning Zumba" which is slower but focuses more on the arms and uses light weight sticks with sand/beads.

    Has anyone done that?

I haven't but we were JUST talking about that at lunch. My friend says it feels extra dorky but that she thinks it works.

  • I agree with everyone else, you won't suck, and if you do, no one will care:)  I've been doing Zumba for 4+ years.  All my instructors start asking who is new, and then telling them their #1 rule:  have fun, and when in doubt, just shake it!  It definitely is fun/high energy, and no one is judging.

I've also done toning Zumba....it will be slower, which might be good as a beginner, and probably won't have as much fancy footwork since the focus is on controlled movements.  Usually the weights are no more than 2-3 lbs.

    Have fun!

  • I would look like a fool I am certain! I wish there was one that was at a good time for me. I would try it, but with Charlotte it makes it difficult.

  • I'm going to download Zumba for the kinect because that's the closest I'm ever going to get to having time to go to a class.
  • I think I'm just going to give it a shot. If I don't like it I dont have to go again!

  • I love Zumba. When I was first starting I watched a few others in the class to find a less shake-that-ass way of doing the moves since my instructor is always shaking her hips.  It helped me learn the moves much easier.
