Getting back into running after major life change?
Hi, I was an occasional poster on this board in the Fall. I ran 3 half marathons, and was training for a full when my personal life drastically changed. My H and I separated just after New Years, and I moved into a new house this past weekend. I got way off my training schedule, and scrapped the marathon I was supposed to run. I managed to keep a fairly consistent workout schedule of shorter runs and swimming up until last week with the move. I haven't worked out in a week and a half (unless you count moving, which I guess was a workout). If you ever had a major life event derail your workout schedule, how did you get back into it? I'm beating myself up over this a bit because I know that working out will help me to manage my stress, but I just can't seem to get out the door to do it. . . I'm now off-schedule for 2 halfs I hoped to do in March, and I want to run the one I planned for late April!!

Re: Getting back into running after major life change?
I am sorry to hear about you and your H.
Don't beat yourself up over it. Life happens and you have to adjust.
Just make yourself a new training schedule/plan that is realistic and you should be fine for your half in April.
GL!
Don't beat yourself up to much. Taking care of other things sometimes just takes over. Like Starry said, life happens.
Make a new plan, and get to work
(which halfs are you planning on?)
Sorry you decided to drop out of your full =( That stinks.
I'm sorry to hear about your situation
Last year, training for my first half, my mom lost her battle with cancer and passed away. After I came out of my two-week mental blackout, I got back into training with 8 weeks to go. I had very broad, generous, encouraging goals. If you look back at my Daily Mile journal from those weeks, it went something like "I will finish the National Half if I have to crawl...I think I can at least walk 13.1 miles and be okay...Okay if I do interval runs with walking I can do this..."
And then I finished my first half marathon in 2:29.
I'm pretty convinced that women especially can do ANYTHING if they put their minds to it. It's just a matter of being in the right mindset. Don't try to push too hard with training or you'll likely end up exhausted or worse, hurt. Set the bar a bit lower than you would if this were your "real" 4th half. And feel free to update us with your progress! You can do it!
Thank you for this.
Florida Beaches is a great half.. but I love all C.Laubers races
Iron Girl.. ugh. so.many.bridges. I did the 5k last year, it was fun, great medal !!
Good Luck!
Nor sure how to answer your question, but thank you for posting it. I'm going through some major life stuff right now and my training has really really suffered. My head and heart isn't in it and I am considering scrapping two big races within the next few weeks. Just thinking about it makes me sad- I've never ever bailed on a race, but I know how much pressure I put on myself with races and I don't want running adding to my stress.
So it's nice to read some others experiences.
I'm so sorry about you and your H. Good luck getting back to it!
Yeah, I lost 4 toenails cause of those bridges last year, so it was not my first choice, but the only really reasonable goal to work towards I think, and I need something to focus on.
Thanks, and best of luck to you too!
Thanks! It's nice to hear that you were able to start back so easily. My run tonight felt good, hopefully I can get back on track too!
I'm glad to hear you were able to come back! I glanced at your blog, and wow, to say you've been through a lot is a huge understatement! Good for you that you were able to do this, your strength is an inspiration.
