BC Discussion: Divergent

Hey ladies it is book club discussion day for Divergent so I'm going to start several different posts and you can respond to as many or as few as you would like as time allows.

Rate Divergent 1-5*

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible?

Which faction would you choose?

Re: BC Discussion: Divergent

  • Rate Divergent 1-5* 5! Loved it. Read it in a day. A workday.

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible? No, I don't think it's possible. It's too restricting and I don't see America going in that direction. I think there are way too many people who would divergent. That said, I thought it was interesting, but I wouldn't like it. I think that having all the kinds of people mix is what gives the potential for greatness, not keeping them segregated.

Which faction would you choose? This is hard because I would not be just one. I think I'm divergent. But, if I had to choose the closest, I would choose erudite. Dauntless was really the only one I could totally rule out and maybe abnegation.

  • Rate Divergent 1-5* 3.5. I thought it was good. It felt a little too much like the Hunger Games and in some places I felt like she was trying a *bit* too hard - but I did really enjoy it and it was a fast read for sure!

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible? Overall it was pretty depressing. Like most distopic novels I think the different factions were just extremes of the different groups/characteristics of people/society that we have now. I don't think it is super realistic but it was interesting to think about.

Which faction would you choose? My guess is that the next books will have Divergent as a faction maybe...I would probably be that. Or Amity. They just seemed nice.

  • 5*!!!!! Hands down 5*. I freaking LOVED this book!!!

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible? I don't feel it is too realistic. Nor am I a fan of it. I think it makes sense that people would try to seperate those personality traits after the world/society falls apart, but I don't think it would work. Part of what makes society work is the way people interact with others. I don't like the thought of being stuck with people who are just like me. It sounds boring and uninspiring.

Which faction would you choose? I realized I asked this again so I'm going to answer in the other post.

  • Rate Divergent 1-5*

I think on Goodreads I gave this a 3 or 4.  I read it right after HG so I couldn't get into this one too much.  I kept comparing the books to each other and HG kept winning out in my head.  Had I read it much later I think I would have liked it more.  I agree with PP who said it was too much like HG.

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible?

I don't particularly care for the world the book was set in.  It just seems too boring to be stuck with people exactly like you in temperament.  I need some variety.  I find it highly unrealistic.

    Which faction would you choose?

I'm a mix between Dauntless and Divergent.  I am close to Dauntless but definitely not all the way.  I have fear and probably would hesitate at some of the stuff they do.

  • 5+++

I loved this book and I'm so glad it was chosen as it's not the type of book I would have picked up on my own to read.

I don't think the world it was set in was realistic, although I found it fascinating.  I really enjoyed the fictitious world I was drawn into.

When I was a teenager I would have said dauntless for sure.  I was (or I like to think I was) a daredevil.  Now I'd say either Erudite or Candor.

Rate Divergent 1-5* 5 stars for me. Loved it. So glad you recommended it. I have been reading som many books lately that I never would have chosen myself, especially these dystopian books, and I really enjoy them. Whoda thunk it?

What do you think of the world Divergent was set in? Does any of it seem realistic/possible? It was certainly interesting, but I don't think overly realistic, although I don't think it was meant to be. Like someone said, the faction's personality traits exist today, but most people today would be considered Divergent :)

Which faction would you choose? Oh you had to ask this. Divergent of course, but if I had to pick one, Erudite, or maybe Amity.
