OK, I asked the dentist about my wisdom teeth

I know I need to speak to the oral surgeon, but I'd like some input.

A previous dentist said all four wisdom teeth should come out as they are all impacted. This dentist said the bottom ones need to come out for sure, but I should leave the top ones alone because there is room for them to come in.

I would rather just be out once and have them all four taken out and be done with it instead of potentially having issues with the top ones later. I'll be 25 in April....I'm not counting on the top ones to magically come in.

Would you push to have all four taken out or just the two (which are the ones really causing pain)? I see the oral surgeon on Friday, so I'll be asking for his thoughts and opinions, but I'm also a believer in being your own advocate.

  • I'd push for all 4 just to have them done. No use in going through the same procedure twice if something should change down the road.

This exactly.  I'd go ahead and do all four!

  • Do all four. My guess is that the other 2 aren't going to just come in on their own and most people have pain when their teeth come in.  I would want to get it done and over with.

  • Good :) That's what I was leaning towards, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't being a brat.

This.  The same thing happened to H.  He was having problems with the bottom ones but the dentist took them all out while she was doing the surgery anyway so he wouldn't have to deal with it again in the future.

  • All four. I'm glad I had all mine done at once. Sure, having six teeth removed sucked for a while but I didn't have to go through it more than once.

  • I was led to believe if they were impacted, that they wouldn't grow in properly??

Either way, I would go for all four. Even if the top ones started coming in, they could create problems and it would be awful to have to go back for a whole other surgery. Just take 'em all at once!

  • all 4. Mine were impacted and kept growing in at different times and giving me an infection so I would say all 4.

  • I had my upper wisdom teeth removed for the same reason; impacted and they were coming in sideways and cutting into my cheek.  My bottom wisdom teeth have not broken through the gum yet (and may never will), but based on my dental history it wouldn't surprise me if those ended up impacted too.  When I had the first two removed I actually wanted the oral surgeon to take out all four (I have a history of overcrowding and have had several adult teeth removed just to make room).  He was willing to take out all four at the same time, however because the bottom two weren't causing me a problem my insurance wouldn't cover that piece of the surgery.  So if anything, if you do push to have all four removed make sure you find out what is and is not covered for that procedure.

  • All 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted and coming in sideways. My oral surgeon told me I couldn't have all 4 removed at once, so I did 2 and 2. Ask your surgeon and he'll let you know what's best.
  • I just had all four of mine taken out. Even though my teeth didn't hurt me, they were impacted trapping derbies that couldn't be brushed or flossed properly. I started to have major gum issues from them being impacted. IMO I'd get them all taken out now, it's harder to recover as you age.

According to my oral surgeon, people who wait to get them all out end up getting cavities in not just the wisdom teeth, but the teeth in front of them too. Which later leads to more teeth needing to be pulled. Something to keep in mind.
