St. Regis Bal Harbour/Miami Beach or W Ft. Lauderdale?

We're planning to stay a couple of nights in South Florida after our cruise (which is out of Ft. Lauderdale).  We were planning to stay at the W Ft. Lauderdale, where we've stayed a couple of times before.  We love that place and like that we can walk to good restaurants easily.  However, I was just cruising the SPG website and saw that they are running a promotion at the St. Regis that would charge full price for our first night but only $4 for our 2nd night.  With this promotion, we could stay at the St. Regis for about $40 more total for the 2 nights.  However, we've never been to the Miami Beach area and an aquaintance in law school in Miami said she didn't really recommend South Beach.  What are your thoughts?  We're looking for beach time, a good pool, and good restaurants nearby.  It will be the last 2 days of our vacation and we want to relax.  We like a little nightlife but aren't the type to hit the clubs until the wee hours.  I don't want to feel unsafe walking around at night.  One night is our anniversary so we'll be looking for a good spot to have dinner.  Which would you choose?

  • I am not a South Beach fan, but Bal Harbour is nice.  Amazing shopping there.  I would do that over Ft Lauderdale.

  • St. Regis Bal Harbour is brand new, stunning and is much better than W Fort Lauderdale. Oh, and it is NOT in South Beach, which I'm not a big fan of, either. You're in Bal Harbour, which is like the Rodeo Drive of Miami, but on the beach. The pool(s) at the resort are some of the most beautiful I've seen, the new restaurant by Jean George Vongerichten is amazing, and you can walk to many more (and better) restaurants than in Fort Lauderdale.  Just across the street at Bal Harbour Shops you have Makoto, La Goulou (sp) and Carpaccio, which are always great, and then a 5 minute walk will get you to Surfside, which has Adriana's for the best Ceviche in town....... or you can walk five minutes west and hit Bay Harbor Islands for The Palm, Le Pine (a new Mediterranean restaurant) or Emilio's, which is always packed because of its owner/chef for the best Italian food in the city.  Hope this helped.... you will LOVE the new St. Regis.....
  • I got married at the St Regis back when it was a Sheraton. I would choose the W because of the location. There are so much more to do around the W, the pool scene is a sight to see , and I like Fort Lauderdale Beach better.
