Re: Vent

  • What kind of job are you looking for? I would check all the job sites and linked in. I haven't used linked in myself, but my BFF who lost her job a few weeks ago managed to get a new job within a few weeks through Linked In. You can find a ton of connections there.

I definitely have been there on the crappy job front. Just figure out what you want and start looking for it! It'll come!

  • [So now, I sit right outside the boss's office and I absolutely hate it. I feel like this is just one step closer to pushing me out the door.]

This reminds me of my job back in 1998.  We got along great when I started there but all of a sudden when we moved offices from downtown to Oakland county, she got a promotion, it went to her head and I somehow became her biitch.  I sat right otuside her office and she'd peek out to watch me occasionally, I'd get all the stupid, menial, tedious tasks, etc. etc. etc.  I was relieved when HRBFA called me back for that 2nd interview in 99.

I would go to Careerbuilder.com and see what's out there in the field you want, as well as companies that you might be interested in (look at their sites and see what positons are open).  That's what I did when I thought I was going to get tossed.

  • Have you checked into government jobs? For me, getting a job with the state was one of the best things I ever did b/c the earning and promotion potential is def there, plus you are backed by the unions. The benefits are good and all the gov't holidays aren't bad either! I know here in PA, you have to take a civil service test for the positions you are interested in, then when one comes available, they send you a letter asking if you are interested and go from there.

Having a crappy job sucks and I truly hope that you are able to find something wonderful where you are appreciated!

  • That sounds miserable.  :(

What kind of work are you doing now and what kind of work would you be interested in?  I have no idea if our company is hiring right now, but I'll look into it and let you know!

  • indeed.com is one of the best job cites in my opinion because it pulls from most of the other cites all into one. Also always check craigslist, career builder, monster, and your local paper. I used to check every. single. day. sometimes twice a day. It's really hard and often discouraging because there ARE so few jobs out there, and so many people want them, but you just have to stick with it.

If you don't have your heart set on anything in particular, I would just look at any and all entry-level job postings and see if you find them interesting.

Also, would you and your DH consider moving? If you're both looking for new jobs it could be a fun opportunity for a fresh start. I only ask bc in my job search I found TONS of positions that were 3-4 hours away from here. If I'd been open to moving, my options would have been infinitely greater.

Finally, tell people you're looking!! I know it's hard because you don't want it to get out to your current company, so you have to be careful. But (especially these days) knowing someone is truthfully the best, and sometimes the only, way to get in the door. I told a few people who I trusted that I was looking to get out and ended up with two job offers because of it. It's not really fair, but it's true!

OH also have someone look at your resume! (I'd be happy to if you want). I was looking through resumes helping my friend in HR the other day and omg they are bad. Not saying yours would be, but a second eye always catches that one little spelling or formatting error that you might have missed. In a stack of resumes that's 2 feet high, those types of mistakes can get you in the "no" pile before they even see your experience.

Sorry so long!!! I feel like a job-searching professional after my long road to finding my current position, so I'm happy to help and share what I learned along the way :)

  • I'm just going to say "ditto" to Rachel - she has given some great advice.

I'm sorry that both of you are in this situation.  Your job takes up most of your time, whether you like it or not, and it sucks to be unhappy.  I hope you find a way to stick it out without feeling miserable, and find something else soon.  My only advice there is DON'T TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU.  Your job is your job.  Leave it there.  Make your free time worthwhile and spend it doing and thinking about things YOU love doing together.  Good luck!
