Design studio day- white cabinets??

We just bought our first home!! We go to the design studio tomorrow to pick out flooring, cabinets, etc. Im really stressed about all of these decisions.

Does anyone have white cabinets? If so how do you like them? I cant decide between the white cabinets or dark ones? Flooring is a whole other issue. Wood or tile? oh so many decisions... I cant even decide what im going to have for lunch!

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Design studio day- white cabinets??

  • I would have gone with white had my builder offered a full overlay, painted white cabinet, but since the only pure white they had was thermafoil, I went with dark cabinets.  Dark Floors as well.  Walnut.

I think both are very pretty. Depends on preference and the look your going for.

    Who are you building with?

  • We are building with Shea homes.

I keep seeing white everywhere and im leaning towards it but i do think the darker cabinets leave the kitchen feeling warmer...

  • I think I'm in the minority since it seems that everyone on design blogs and pinterest and the D&R board seem to love white cabinets, but I don't like them.

I had white cabinets in each of my last two homes. They get dirty around the knobs/pulls and I felt like I was constantly scrubbing my cabinets. Plus, I like the warmer/cozier feeling of dark cabinets.

We have dark cherry cabinets now, and while I like them, I wish the previous owners of our house had picked lighter countertops. Our floors are dark wood, the counters are a medium-to-dark granite, and the cabinets are cherry. It's a little too dark all together, a lighter counter would have broken it up better.

I also like the look of lower & upper cabinets being different colors. Or, if you have an island, the island can be a different color than the wall cabinets. Like this.

What about a color other than white or stained wood? I've seen some really pretty pictures on pinterest of cabinets painted shades of gray or a light sage green. Here's an example.

  • I love white cabinets and WOOD! I think the resale value is huge with hardwood floors.
  • I own a condo with honey oak colored cabinets and am currently renting a townhome with white cabinets.  While I agree with pp that the white cabinets do get dirtier quicker with stains around the knob areas, I really like the look of white better.  I like the kitchen to feel airy and bright.  We are currently building a house and are doing a soft white cabinets (not a super bright white like we have right now) and will have a medium brown toned hickory floor.  I am definitely a little nervous about wood in the kitchen (I've never had this before), but I'm not a big fan of tile in the kitchen.  It seems to harsh and cold to me.

  • Love my white cabinets. It was one of my must haves. They don't get any more dirty than any other cabinet finish. Dirt is dirt and it'll be there whether you get a dark stain or white. You'll just see it more with white (and probably be more likely to clean it up!)
  • We have a light wood right now for our cabinets and we have a darker hardwood floor in the kitchen. We're moving soon and I hope our new home has white cabinets, but if it doesn't, I'm going to paint them. I love the look of white. Probably a warmer white though.

As for hardwood in the kitchen - love it. Yes, it can get wet and spilled on, but like with any flooring you wipe it up right away. It's not like you're going to let the spill just sit there and sink in. We did hardwood on the entire first level, so there is a flow from room to room. It ties the rooms together IMO.

  • White cabinets are always on my must have list of any of the houses we've ever owned.  The one house we bought that didn't have them my H and I painted them white one Super Bowl weekend... that was a real adventure!
  • The house we're in the process of buying has white kitchen cabinets and dark red walls, and I love it! The white cabinets brighten the room and make the space feel larger, while the dark red walls provide a cozy, homey atmosphere.
