Pregnant (or formerly pregnant) runners

Is it unrealistic to want to do a 5K at 6.5 months pregnant in June (when it will likely be pretty hot here)?  I really want to register for this, but am not sure if it's crazy.  The registration fee isn't cheap and it says they sell out quickly, so I wouldn't be able to do the "wait and see how I feel" thing.

FWIW, I am not regularly running now, but I am finally getting back into CrossFit now that morning sickness is not kicking my ass.  I know that I can run a 5K without training pretty easily when I am CFing regularly (I did it in November).  I am cool with walking if I need to.

Re: Pregnant (or formerly pregnant) runners

  • run, totally depends.  walk/run combo, for sure
  • If I was feeling good at that point, absolutely. And if you're ok walking it, sign up! My friend delivered her youngest last week at 41+ weeks and had gone for a run that same week. :) It's definitely possible. That race sounds really fun and different!
  • It's really hard to tell at this point, obviously.  With my son, it would have been no problem at all (though I wasn't a runner, but I could have easily walked one).  With my daughter, I had horrible hip and pelvic pain that started around 18 weeks.  I have a pretty high pain tolerance (delivered both babes without an epi or pain meds, including back labor with my DD), and there is no way on Earth I would have been able to muster my way through 3 miles.  Wandering slowly at the grocery store for 30min wiped me out and made me sore enough to have to sit on the couch for the rest of the day with heating pads.  I assumed the pain was a second baby thing (my ligaments loosening up earlier, etc).  I think my experience with my second pregnancy wasn't the norm at all.

Anyway, after all that rambling, I guess I'd say that odds are you'd be able to complete it, especially if you're open to walking some or all of it.  Just make sure you hydrate well if it's hot...drink until you think you've had enough, then drink some more!  Dehydration and preterm labor are no joke.

  • It is hard to know. I'd sign up, b/c most likely you'll be able to at least walk/run it.

I was not able to run (or walk or do much of anything!) during the second half of my first two pregnancies, b/c I was already having contractions that were making progress at 6/7 months. The last time around I was able to run until the end.

    Good luck!

  • As long as you are ok with walking part or most, I say go for it.  The only thing I would be weary about would be the heat, not the distance or anything.

Disclaimer - this is coming from the girl who is bummed that she can't do a 5k this Sunday at 33w5d pregnant because the race starts at 10am and my aunts want me at my baby shower at 10:30am.  I'm REALLY wishing my shower was at like 1pm now so I could do both Embarrassed

  • I'd sign up.  Worst case scenerio is if you can't run it, you can walk it!

I've never been pregnant, so I can't give you advice on that. However, when I was researching that race, it said "it's more about having fun".  It doesn't seem like a race that seems competitive.

Also, not sure when the KC one is, but the Chicago one for 6/2 is already full! I can't believe it filled up. Wahhh.

  • I think you'll be fine.  I ran 5k's with all 3 of my kiddos.  Just listen to your body on the whole run/walk thing.

And pee right before the race... even if you think you don't have to go!

  • I think it's doable.  I say register and if anything you can walk when you feel you need to.
  • At the time I would have signed up with the intention of running. Knowing what I know now, I would have been walking, but I could still have walked it at this point.
