Favorite trip ever?

Cost and distance not a factor, what's your fav?  I'm sure this has been asked before, but I've got to know.  My best friend and I are both recently divorced (and traveling for the first time in a long time) and I'm curious.

Re: Favorite trip ever?

  • Its hard to pick just one! But I loved Istanbul...not quite as touristy, lots of fun things to see, nice people. If you wanted to spend more time in Turkey I hear Antalya and Bodrum are BEAUTIFUL beachy towns. I also loved our time in Warsaw/Krakow. Paris has always been just ok for me, as has Berlin. I like

For the record, I've never been to the "hot spots" of Europe (Italy/Spain/Greece).

  • For tourist sites, Egypt.  Everything was so amazing and the people were so wonderful.

For relaxation and beauty, Maldives.  Pure heaven.

I am currently in Bali and I must say that it is a nice combo of sites and relaxation, it is going to rank high up on my list.

  • Croatia currently holds the top spot but that may change by the end of the year.  Plitvice Lakes in Croatia is one of the most beautiful spots on earth and I would love to go back and spend a week just hiking all the trails.

I will be off to Germany in the fall; dates are not set yet...still waiting for concert dates to be announced.  Am hoping to be there for 3-4 weeks and I plan on hitting at least 10 cities.  This is a "ME" trip; doing it alone without the hubby.  Depending on how it works out there is a good chance I will not come home!  Germany has been at the top of my list of places that I need to visit and it has been joked by friends that I was born in the wrong country; they are convinced that I should've been born in West Germany! :)

My trip to Palenque, Mexico is my #2 trip.  I LOVE Mexico and have never had a bad trip down there.  I am a huge Mesoamerican/Pre-Columbian archaeology buff and love visiting the archaeological sites and museums.

  • My favorite trip to date was the 4.5 week trip I took to France a few years ago. I rented a car and did a big loop of the country, starting in Normandy and ending up in Paris. It was a trip I had dreamed of doing for many years, and I loved being able to explore so many different areas of France.

My second favorite trip was probably the one I took two years ago to Europe by myself during my divorce. The only thing I preplanned was my first three nights in Amsterdam; otherwise, the rest of the trip I planned as I went. It was a very healing and helpful experience at a very difficult time in my life.

Other favorites have been Norway, Slovenia, Czech Republic, and the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico).

  • I have three which are my top trips.

The Baltic cruise ticked off the biggest item on my bucket list -- which was to see the Jordan Staircase at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, so that was a dream come true trip, even though the highlight of the trip for me was Helsinki.

The second Canada/New England cruise I took was hands down the best trip I have ever taken -- we stopped in St. John's, Newfoundland and St. Pierre et Miquelon, France, which were awesome stops.  St. John's arranged for icebergs in the harbour, while the sailaway from St. Peirre was the best sailaway I have ever had.

The best land vacation I have done was my trip to Australia in 2006, with visits to Sydney (skip it, truly!), Adelaide (too few people think of this great city as a destination), the Barossa Valley (book a private tour, it's worth it), Kangaroo Island (best "shore excursion" ever), and Melbourne (met my husband, and had the most irreverent tour of Parliament House ever!)

I don't mind being held to a higher standard; I mind being held to a lower one. (Sam Seaborn, The West Wing)

  • Antarctica. It was my first post-separation solo trip, and it was a wonderful chance to reflect, be inspired, and see one of the most beautiful ad unique places in the world. Bonus was that I was surrounded by a bunch of other like-minded solo travelers, and we shared a wonderful experience together. It's hard to explain why Antarctica is such an amazing place to visit. It changes you somehow, and most of us can't really explain it. Something about experiencing such a vast, empty, and beautiful place. If you ever do go, don't go for the wildlife. Don't go with expectations. Just go, and see what the White Continent has in store for you.

  • It's really hard to choose but I guess it would be Southwest China.  The scenery there was outstanding, the food was wonderful, and (unlike other places we've been) the people we genuinely nice and rarely did we get swindled.  We backpacked a lot and had to rely on my poor Mandarin so it was tough, but very rewarding as we got to go to places where we were the only tourists.

My trips when I was single were a lot different since we did not do as much camping, hiking, etc.  New Orleans was the funnest place for me when I was single and with girlfriends.

  • Admittingly I have not traveled near as much as I would've liked, but my fave trips have been our two to Hawaii, I just absolutely love it there.

  • For relaxation Aruba and for tourism Paris and northern France

  • Thailand and Cambodia. It was the perfect mix of sightseeing, relaxing, exploring, and fun. The flights are pricey to get there, but once you do everything is really affordable.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • Mine was our African safari to Tanzania.  loved every minute of it.  we went with friends who lived there and we were able to tent camp in the Serengeti and stay in lodges at Ngorongoro crater - such a diverse place - but so accommodating and friendly.  and we weren't in a large group - just the 2 couples made it an amazing adventure and we will be going back when DS is a bit older.

  • For Europe it's Sarajevo and Budapest

For NZ it's Doubtful Sound and Kaikora

    For Australia it's the GBR

For South America its the Inca Trail, Iguassu Falls and Galapogus

For Asia it's Xian, HCM City and Siam Reap

If I was newly divorced I would go with NZ, SE Asia or Europe, lots of other single backpackers and travellers to see things with.

  • Five week trip around Asia.  I think I loved it almost as much for how long we were able to travel as for the countries we visited.  It was just an amazing experience to be able to be on the road exploring new places for so long, and I wish we could have gone longer!

We went to Hong Kong, China (Beijing, Xian, Datong), Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island), and Taiwan.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
