Posted in the locker room at the gym today

I saw this in the locker room at the gym today.  That kind of bothers me - it is the locker room. We're going to be changing clothes there.   There will be nudity.

Re: Posted in the locker room at the gym today

  • What.  The.  Eff???

So what is the acceptable time to be nude in between business clothes and workout clothes?

Will there be people with stopwatches to ensure the policy is upheld?

  • Wow, that is ballsy.  How are you supposed to cover up when you are changing your bra or something?

Granted, I wouldn't prance around naked, but I wouldn't be covered up if I were changing.

  • I actually don't mind it. I go to an LA fitness too and would love to see this in the locker room. Changing is one thing, obviously I do it too, but there are women who clearly love to flaunt their nudity. I think that's what the sign means -- get dressed rather than getting ready for work naked in front of the mirror.
  • Indifferent

I, personally, would probably take the snarky approach and ask to speak to a manager in order to clarify whether this means that all clothing changes must be done in a bathroom stall, or if there's some sort of acceptable number of seconds during which a body part can be naked during a clothing change, etc.

  • I don't really like how it is written because it seems to criminalize all locker room users, but I can appreciate what I interpret to be the intent. I used to go to a gym where the nudity was a little over the top, like women drying their hair for 15 minutes completely naked; at least wear a bra and underwear, kwim?

I don't get ready for work naked in front of the mirror, but I do dress up to my bra, and sometimes do my makeup without my top on because it gives me a few more minutes of cooldown time.  It isn't flaunting - I'm not the flaunting type at all, but I really do need a little extra cool down time.

Now I wonder if this sign was intended for me, and that makes me really uncomfortable about going there.

I totally understand that; I would sweat through my shirt if I put it on right after my shower. I think bra and underwear are non-offensive. Prolonged full-on nudity, especially while sitting on locker room surfaces, is a little much IMO.

I don't get why people are so offended by the dressing habits of others. If I work out in the gym, I turn bright red and sweat like a maniac, and continue to do so after my shower.  If I put on my clothes before I have time to cool off, I end up sweating through them.  So, I'd prefer to remain uncovered while I do my hair and makeup.  It means an extra five minutes of nudity.  SO WHAT.  Don't look if boobies offend you in a locker room.

No kidding - I would probably change gyms over something so anachronistic as fear of a naked body.

  • I think I see what they are trying to convey with the sign, but it's not very clear as to what they want you to do instead. Define modesty...it's going to be different for every person.

This is the part of the nudity that always bothered me. I am a big germaphobe and I can't grasp why someone would want to sit their bare bottom on a bench that other people put their shoes on, sweaty clothes, etc and vice versa-  I wouldn't want to put my clean clothes, water bottle, ipod, etc on the bench knowing that there was a bare @ss sitting there not long ago.

In re: people getting ready nude, whatevs. I never did, but I wasn't bothered by it.

A little much of what?  Sweating through my bra and undies isn't really that appealing either.  What is the issue with someone else's breasts being exposed?  Just don't look. You're not obligated to make conversation.

If the issue is hygeine - and I agree no one should sit with a bare rear on a shared chair - that can be addressed by sitting on a towel, not enforcing a no-nude policy in a changing room.

But the germ thing though, I mean, if you don't want a bare bottom sitting on a bench, make it a rule that no sweaty clothes that just got peeled off the bare bottom can be put on the bench either.

I don't sit around nude in the locker room, but I will walk naked from my locker to the shower because I'm not wrapping a clean towel around my sweaty self.  I don't sit on the bench naked either, but I also don't expect them to be even remotely clean, so things like my bottle, my clean towels, I always try to keep in my bag so I can at least maintain my innocence about their purity.

  • Also I bet dollars to donuts they'd NEVER post a similar sign in the men's locker room
  • This would irritate me.  It's a locker room. If you're offended by nudity, then don't go in there.  WTF is wrong with people?

As an aside, my gym also had a new sign up today: "No exfoliating or shaving in the steam room or jacuzzi."  WTFF?  I do not even want to know why it was necessary to put that sign up.  Who would do that?  Ick!

  • I would be really upset about this.  It's a freaking locker room.  If they didn't want people getting naked, they should close the locker room and just have a bathroom.

As for sitting on the bench with a bare bum... I would never do it, but shouldn't it be a personal choice?

We have a sign like this!!! I can't remember exactly what it says, something about no shaving or other hygiene activities in the steam room, sauna or hot tub. I've always wondered the same thing - who on earth was doing that sort of stuff in there?? Ick.

I think that they need to put that cause you know that there is always that one person.

  • We have a similar sign but

    1. It's written with MUCH more tact than that.

    and

    2. It's for the sauna.

My gym doesn't have issues with flaunting women (that I know of... I don't spend much time in the locker room) so maybe that's why.. but that seems strange to me. It's a place to shower and get dressed... One obviously needs to be a little less than fully clothed at some point, no?

I don't understand, who cares if someone is naked? It's the locker room. I'm assuming they aren't rubbing their boobs in your face, so how does it affect you? It doesn't. You don't have to look if you don't want to. I'm not sure why you assume they are flaunting as the locker room is the place to be naked.

  • People who are upset by nudity in locker rooms should probably reconsider their gym memberships. I find the controversy over this eye roll-inducing.
  • I think they just need to re- word the sign.  Arnt locker rooms for that (nudity?)  I think they actually meant to put please wear appropriate clothing while working out, please cover up, your modesty will be appreciated by all.

The thing that bothers me, is that it doesnt sound very professional.

I think it is pretty clear that they meant covering up in the locker room.  The only place this sign is hung is in the women's locker room.

It is pretty unprofessional, but that has sort of been my experience with this particular gym.  I just can't beat the convenience of it - located on the floor below my office - otherwise I would have quit long ago when their pool stopped working.

last month,  my gym had to do construction in the female locker room.  since all the workers were men, they switched the locker rooms temporarily.  everything was the same in the mens locker room except their shower curtains are clear at the top.  so, we all had to shower with our boobies showing.

i personally dont mind, boobs are boobs.  my mom used to take me to the gym with her when i was a kid and i remember all the women walking around naked.  no big deal.  to this day, i dont bash a lash.

i think the issue here is not the women "flaunting" but instead insecure people misinterpreting it as flaunting.  i do feel badly for those that are insecure, but i think that is their issue, not one for the gym management.  i really really doubt that LA Fitness has a bunch of naked ladies, lounging around on benches, talking on their cell phones while painting their toe nails.

  • IMO, people are a little prudish.

Who cares if woman are walking around naked at the gym, it's too be expected.

Maybe if it was more accepted, girls would grow up seeing the beauty in it and would appreciate their own bodies more.

I bet that's because Men would never be offended that another man is walking around naked.

  • Eh, I guess the sign doesn't offend me.  It should have been written a little differently.

I would assume that this isn't directed to people changing, but maybe a more extreme issue? I am just trying to give this gym the benefit of the doubt.

My only thing is I would not be getting ready (like doing my hair) sans clothing because I'm too paranoid about cell phone cameras or other devices set up by perverts.  There was an incident years ago at a nearby Park district locker room.

    image
  • JFC, this is ridiculous. I'm already modest in the changing room but that would totally rub me the wrong way if they posted that in my locker room. And ditto the person that said they'd never post this in the men's locker room.

Unless women are spread-eagle on the benches, I think this is soooo inappropriate.

You'd be surprised. ?On the tri forum I go on the guys have some really bad stories.?

  • I'd be pissed if this showed up in my gym! Its condescending and written so...poorly. I kind of get the meaning behind it and have spent plenty of time in the locker room with this woman who does all aspects of getting ready for the day {lotion, hair, make up} without a speck of clothing on. Sure, its not ideal, but its a locker room...with a community shower. I got over my fear of nudity and went on with my life.

Honestly, if this was my gym I'd like to have a conversation with management about what the heck this is supposed to me. Do you have a community shower area?! If so, you long are you allowed to shower? And is any nudity allowed or can you at least change clothes?

I think it just makes everyone more conscious and judgmental of those around them...exactly what a locker room doesn't need!
