Running moms - urinary incontinence?

I'm mostly a lurker but I am hoping to get some insight and support from the running mommas on the board.  I am very inspired by all of you.  Prior to my pregnancy, I was running consistently and ended up getting pregnant while I was training for my first half-marathon.  I ran it at 14 weeks and all was good.  I stopped running all together at around 20 weeks because it just wasn't comfortable.

It has been a struggle getting back into running.  I was probably 6 months postpartum before I really tried anything consistent and now I am dealing with urinary incontinence while running.  It's embarrassing, frustrating, and discouraging.  I have been going to physical therapy for about 6 weeks - working on exercises that will strengthen my pelvic floor and abdominals.  I thought I was seeing some progress and then had a major setback during my (attempt to) run on Monday.  I hardly got in a mile because I was so uncomfortable with all the urinary sensations.  I'm so discouraged.

Has anyone else dealt with this?  Any advice, encouragement, suggestions, success stories?

Thanks for reading and for helping a lurker out.

Re: Running moms - urinary incontinence?

  • I wish I could find the article I read about how strengthening your quads, glutes and hamstrings is more important.  I have noticed that when I'm strong there, I don't have as many issues.

But yes, I've had three babies, and I leak when I run.  It is a horrible feeling. On days I know I'm running in the afternoon, I quit drinking after lunch.  But if I run in the morning, I am usually okay.

If I'm on the treadmill, I try to last "just a couple more minutes" and then go if I need to.  It is frustrating as hell.  I've made sure to wear clothes that are dark colored and don't show.  And I have noticed that it's never as much as I think it is, so that's good.

If it doesn't get better for you, I know doctors are always willing to talk about medical intervention.

  • Yep, happens to me, too. I now wear a Poise pad on every run and scope out restrooms along the way. My OB said keep Kegeling, but until we're 100% done having kids, she doesn't want to do anything more permanent.
