Vegas or Key West? WWYD?

J and I are planning a long weekend together in April. We started off talking about Key West, but eventually settled on Las Vegas because of the price difference. Well, I've played around with it some more, and gotten the prices closer.

I've never really wanted to go to Vegas too terribly much, but Key West is my FAVORITE place in the entire world. He wanted to try to stick to around $500 total for his half because we know that we'll spend several hundred dollars on food and drinks no matter where we go, and he still has to think about paying for vacation with his daughters over the summer, plus he has to take the 2 weekdays off work unpaid. The prices I'm coming up with are  $785pp for KW and $510pp for Vegas, which includes air, hotel, transportation, and activities/admission fees.

A big part of me wants to bite the bullet and pay the difference in the trips and go to Key West. That would put me at $1060 plus food and drinks for 3 nights/3 days in KW, vs $510 plus food and drinks for Vegas. That does seem steep for a long weekend, but it's likely the only getaway I'll get to go on this year, and that big part of me says, "$510 for somewhere you've only had mild interest in versus $1060 for your favorite place ever."

WWYD?

Re: Vegas or Key West? WWYD?

  • Well I've been to both pretty recently, and I'd say you'll spend a hell of a lot more on food and drinks in Vegas than KW, everything in Vegas is just more expensive, they get you in there based on the hotels being so cheap. So really, you could end up spending about the same total on either trip in the end. If weather is a factor, next month Vegas will just be warming up and the weather is hit or miss in March, but in KW you can't go wrong :)

  • If you love Key West so much I would go there... plus I think it is a much better first trip with a bf.  Vegas is awesome but it is kind of exhausting, KW is definitely more chill of a trip.  Where are you going to stay in KW?  We always stay in a really awesome B&B if you are looking for recommendations.
  • Didn't you just get back from Vegas?

ETA: I was confuzzled, I thought your "I'm Baaaaaaaaack" post was you getting back from Vegas.

  • LOL No, the "I'm baaaack" was back from our sleepover weekend.

I keep saying that food is more expensive in Vegas, and people keep telling me, "Oh, no, you can eat CHEAP in Vegas! They have $3.99 buffets!" Yeah, but the Burger Bar is $30pp once you factor in tax and tip, and that's one of the cheaper places I've found!

The cottage I REALLY want to stay in at KW has a 5 night minimum, which is what got us to start un-considering KW in the first place, but I guess I look at it more now as, What difference does it make where we sleep? (I really, REALLY wanted a cottage with a private jacuzzi.) I can't remember the name of the place off the top of my head that we're looking at, but I'll definitely take recommendations!

  • We always stay at Merrero's Guest Mansion and I love it!
  • Have you tried travelzoo dot com ?

  • Key West!

Traveling is so much about the experience, if you're not going to enjoy it then it's not worth 5 c. (that's cents. Where's the damn cents key - the c with a line thru it?)

    Vacation
  • I wouldn't pay the difference or put pressure on him to do something he can't afford. I have tried to pay for men in the past and it usually doesn't end well... they get cut and feel like losers, etc.

I don't like Vegas for a trip with a BF - prefer it as girls only but there are lots of other places to visit for that budget. Maybe something that doesn't involve flying because it's usually a big pain to get in and out of the airports for a weekend trip and then you need to constantly pay for cabs, etc.

  • This all came about because I have a credit with southwest that I have to use by May or I'll lose it, so flying is kinda mandatory! lol

Well that makes sense I guess... I still wouldn't pay for his portion though. Maybe there is a way to get the credit extended to go at a time when you can both afford it?

Yes, for $50 you can extend the credit for 1 year. I just did this.
