Where else can I look?

Other than apartmentguide.com and forrent.com what other sites do you use to find apartment rentals? I've also tried looking into the roommate route, and I only know of roommates.com, any other suggestions?

My budget is soooo low that I can really only afford one bedroom apartments in not so great areas, but closer to work, and those not so great areas are even further from my family (right now I live halfway between family and work, about 30 minutes each direction).

I wish I knew someone who needed a roommate, it would make this so much easier.

 Any ideas/suggestions?

Re: Where else can I look?

  • Around here Craig's List has a ton of listings. I know it gets a bad rap for some of the weirder stuff that goes on there but the apartment listings are usually legit.

  • Craigslist is the place to check for apartment listings in my area.
  • What about checking with the County Housing Department? They should have a list of lower income apartments and maybe you qualify for some assistance?!?
  • I should have also mentioned that I stalk CL regularly, as in, every couple hours. Those are mostly ghetto too. I guess I can look into county housing, but I'm pretty sure I make too much money. Unfortunately I have a lot of bills, which is why my rental budget is so low.

  • I would also check with some of your realty companies. They may have rental listings that aren't on Craig's List.
  • Is there any kind of weekly free paper for your area? In my town, there's a weekly publication that has all kinds of listings, including housing.

  • I have been a LL for almost 14 years and believe it or not, many LLs and property managers are very old school and just stick a "for rent" sign out front. Another place you can check online is Zillow, but your best bet may be to drive around a little.
