s//o- Have you ever been the smelly person at the gym?

Have you ever worn anything or ate anything and noticed that you were the smelly person at the gym that evening? I'm experimental in the kitchen and have definitely used spices that made my sweat more "earthy". The worst was some cute t-shirts i bought from the sleep section of Target. The first few times they were fine. Now, they seem to react terribly to my sweat. Even at a light glisten, I will reek in these shirts. How about all of you? Is there anything you avoid out of courtesy to other gym goers?

Re: s//o- Have you ever been the smelly person at the gym?

  • Yup, I'll freely admit that I absolutely reek when I run or do heavy cardio.  I can smell myself, so I'm well aware.  I try only to run on the dreadmill when absolutely necessary, I'd much rather run outside anyway.  I get extremely hot when working out and running, and mixed with a hot gym, I know it's not pretty.  I keep my dreadmill runs to 30 minutes or less and if possible, try to take the treadmill as far away from any other people.  As soon as  I'm done, I get out of my nasty clothes and shower right away.

It's not a deoderant thing either, my deod works fine, it's the actual smell of my sweat that is the problem.  Maybe it's something I'm eating that is causing it?

  • OH yes. It was embarassing. I do a lot 2 a day workouts, so I normally pack a second set of gym clothes in my bag in the morning. One day I decided I was going to take the evening off, but then changed my mind and decided to go to a yoga class at the gym with a friend. I figured I would just re-wear the AM workout clothes...gross, but I'd suck it up.

Well, that was the day we were assigned a partner in yoga. They had to use a strap to pull our waist higher in downward dog...I smelled and I was so embarassed.

  • I had this happen once, and I left the gym right away. I was so embarrassed! I took my shirt to wear to the gym straight out of the dryer. I guess I had waited a little too long to put it in the dryer. Once I started sweating, I started smelling a mildew smell. It kept getting stronger, so at that point I knew it was me, and I left. The shirt did not smell when I took it out of the dryer, but I guess the sweat activated the mildew. I'm too paranoid to let it happen a second time.

  • I am certain I've been the smelly girl on more than one occasion.  which is why I don't judge when I'm next to someone that forces me to breath through my mouth.  it happens.
  • I can pretty much guarantee that I'm the stinkiest person at the gym whenever I work out. I eat a moderated carb diet and it seriously brings the funk. I once apologized to a trainer who was helping me for how awful I smelled and he just smiled, nodded, and said, "low carb, right?"
  • Whenever I prep chili in the morning before work, I inevitably end up smelling like it @ the gym.  Now I try to prep the chili the night before or do it before I shower in the morning.
  • I am fairly certain that I am usually the stinky person at the gym.  I wear deoderant and shower, but when I sweat, I smell like Fritos (seriously, dirty dog smell - eww).

Also, for the longest time I thought I smelled repulsive in general when I was working hard at the gym, but I have since noted that it's when my "powder fresh" deoderant was working that I would notice the smell.  I switched deoderant scents (especially for the gym) and now I feel like I smell much better overall.  LOL

I'm always apologising to people about it, like when I'll stop to chat with someone after spin.  I'm looking forward to the summer when I'll just smell like chlorine when I sweat.

  • I am sure I have! Thank goodness our gym has a very "open" area concept so the air circulates pretty good.

I know it not fun to be near someone when it's that bad, but at the same time I expect it when I am at the gym.

  • I normally don't sweat a lot so I'm not usually the smelly person in class EXCEPT for the time my good friend convinced me to do the Blueprint Cleanse with her.  Apparently, it's amazing if you also workout while cleansing so I took a Physique 57 class, and about 20 minutes in I was like, ugh who is that?  Then as I bent over to do one of the moves, I was like, OMG it's me!  After some further reading later, I discovered that the smell is allegedly the toxins coming out of one's body.  I was mortified, especially when the instructor came over to correct my form.  She probably wanted to throw up.

  • I work up a serious funk during my favorite zumba class, but I don't think it's any worse than anyone else's funk.  We all sweat like crazy in there--the whole room gets hot and funky and steamy, to where we have to open the doors and windows.  I hit the showers immediately after.

I also seriously reek when I rollerblade but, again, hit the showers immediately afterwards.

  • Whenever I get back into my bursts of swimming a lot, my sweat smells like chlorine. Its not as bad as when I swam in college, but regardless its not a pleasant smell.

I mainly feel bad when I ride the bus home after a great gym session. Im normally nice and sweaty/stinky which others may not appreciate!
