Austin, TX: long weekend rec's
I plan on staying in Austin for a quick romantic weekend trip in May/June. I need some recommendations of hotels/B&B's to stay at. We plan on hanging out on 6th St. and really not staying at the hotel too often. I would like to be cheap and not spend over $150 a night.
Also, great places to eat or must do's?
Re: Austin, TX: long weekend rec's
One of my favorite hotels in Austin is the Stephen F on Congress. I haven't stayed at the Driscoll, but that one gets great reviews as well. I would think it would be less than $150, but I'm not sure.
Def do the Salt Lick BBQ & Kirbey Lane (their queso gets rave reviews). My personal favorite is Hula Hut - it is part of the Chuy's chain, but the food is different. It's on the lake, so waits on the weekend can be a little long.
There is a good Tapas place on 4th closer to the W - Malaga. It's pretty good. Max's Wine Dive on 2nd close to the Convention Center is really good - we had awesome service there a few months ago and I'd go back in a heartbeat. I also love to walk around Whole Foods on 4th - you can also eat there and the food is pretty good. Oh, I also hear the bar at the W is a hot spot to hang out in the evening, but the hotel room prices are insane.
Of course, check out the food trucks on South Congress.
The Driskill is an iconic hotel on 6th street that would definitely be a great hotel to stay at for the experience, but I doubt you can stay there for under $150 except on a Sunday night. You could stay at the La Quinta by the Capital for about $100/night and walk/pedicab pretty much anywhere downtown. Obviously, it's not a very nice hotel but what does it matter if you aren't going to be there much?
Here are some restaurant recs including some mentioned above:
Breakfast: Max's Wine Dive, Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane
Lunch: Hula Hut, Chuy's, South Congress Cafe, Salt Lick BBQ, Trudy's (get a Mexican Martini!), Alamo Drafthouse (meal and movie!- very cool)
Dinner: The Driskill, Taverna, Carmelo's
Coffee: Mozart's
If you're looking for things to do, just walking around downtown or along South Congress is very entertaining! Do a tour of the Capital and then walk across the street to the Bob Bullock Museum for an IMAX presentation. If you like to shop boutiques you'll find quite a few downtown, if you want to browse a really nice shopping center, head up to The Domain.
