Top Chef finale (spoilers)

AKA a page to RockNVoll since we seem to be the only two participating in these discussions Smile

I liked that they brought back the sous chef selection method from last season with the blinded dishes.  I was really excited to see Barbara Lynch there and even more excited when Paul picked her first.  I hope that means Top Chef will be filming in Boston next season.

I think it's pretty obvious that Sarah is trying to manage her image better after seeing the first set of episodes, but she's not actually changing her personality.  All of the "my girls..... and Tyler" stuff was getting on my nerves, even though Tyler was also being annoying and pushy and I wouldn't have wanted him working for me, either.  She just can't hold back all the comments for whatever reason.

I was happy to see both finalists put out great food.  I much prefer to see someone win for cooking great food vs seeing someone lose for making a mistake.

I loved seeing the families there.  So cute!

Re: Top Chef finale (spoilers)

  • It would be awesome if they filmed in Boston!  I love No. 9 Park (as any regular on the board knows, haha), but Barbara was so dull and looked so mean!

I totally agree that I'm glad they both cooked great meals.  I wish I could do a tour of all the Top Chef's restaurants.  How fun (and fattening) would that be?

Sarah doesn't annoy me nearly as much as Heather.  I couldn't really root for her, but I can't put my finger on why.  I did feel bad when she got stuck with Tyler though--he's so annoying and ridiculously full of himself!  I suppose he would have made a good villain for the season, and would have taken the heat off Bev if he were around, haha.

I wish they would have explained how they picked the potential sous chefs.  I mean, two people who didn't even make it past the selection round but no Bev, Ed, etc?  I know they included the former for the drama factor, but I still wanted more reasoning.

I felt bad for the other Master Chef that he didn't get picked!  How embarrassing!

I was soooo happy that Paul won!

I read an interview with Gail this morning and she said they decided to give them a break.  http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/03/01/top-chef-s9-finale-gail-simmons/

Heather annoys me more than Sarah but seeing Sarah being BFFs with Heather makes me feel like Sarah has the same values.

Barbara warmed up at the end.  She did seem to be ALL BUSINESS at first, though.  I think Paul totally impressed her and that's what made her back off.  I did think it was weird that he put her on dessert.  I thought one of the other courses might have been a better use of her talents, but I guess it all worked out in the end.

  • Oh, and I want to know how much money each contestant won in total!  I just looked at the Top Chef website and Paul won either the quickfire or elimination challenge in eight out of twelve episodes!  And he won all four of the last four elimination challenges.  I knew he'd won a lot, but I guess I didn't realize it was that much.  Kudos to him for not tooting his own horn a ton like they usually do in the interview segments.

  • Thanks for pointing out that interview; it filled in a lot of holes.  I think they should show more of how long it takes them to deliberate.  Like flash a 10pm, 2am, 5am kind of lapse, you know?  I think they're short changing themselves by making it seem like they decide after 15 minutes of talking (at least, that's how it comes across to me).
