To make a long story short, my current job sucks. Too much to go into, but due to budget cuts I was thrust into another department i never wanted to be in and was never well trained for. The good news is I am moving on to a different job but this last job has sucked the confidence out of me. I am nervous that I will transfer these feelings to the new job. Any advice? TIA
Re: Need Job Confidence!
Yeah. I've definitely seen that. One of my girlfriends calls it "beaten puppy syndrome.". I think for her, she just slowly came around to the positive feedback she received in the new position. I think ensuring that you understand your new manager's expectations will help tremendously. Just let him or her know you look forward to regular feedback on your performance. Then take it graciously when they give it--even if it's hard to hear. And make changes accordingly.
You can do it. Just hang in there and try not to feel defeated before you even start.
Been there and I'm helping a friend who is going through this right now.
You've already taken the first step and gotten a new job, which is huge! Clearly you are a good, skilled person. They hired you for a reason, now go in there and show them they made the right choice. A new job is a chance to refresh and rebrand yourself - new challenges, new opportunities to learn.
I came into my current position wanting to be viewed as an expert in my field who will do whatever it takes to get the job done well and on time. I consciously made the decision to let my work shine, educate myself on what is going on in my field, and work hard. So far, it has paid off...people view me exactly as I want them to. So, basically, you get back what you put out! So think long and hard about how you want to be viewed in your new work place and then be it.

Take the time to meet with every person on your new team to introduce yourself and find out what everyone does. This will help you learn who to approach for what, and hopefully will give you a sense of trust with your new coworkers.
Ask your new manager if you can set up weekly meetings for the first few months to make sure you're moving in the right directions. This should give you concrete feedback that you're doing things right, and at pre-planned frequencies so your manager knows it's coming.
Seek out training for this new job. Since a lack of training killed your confidence, hopefully new training will help build it back up. Good luck in your new job!
