Gravel-voiced Co-irker

Just pronounced this guy's name as Man-YOO-ell JEW-arr-ezz.

Seriously? We live in Southern California... you don't know how to pronounce Manuel Juarez?

Re: Gravel-voiced Co-irker

  • I have a coworker named Javier, whose name gets pronounced with an english "J" and rhyming with "caviar."  "Javvy-ahr."  Seriously.
  • Manuel I kinda get. I always second guess myself and over think it... man-you-ell or man-well.

But she can't pronounce Juarez? Really? I'm in rural PA and I know that one.

On a related note, I was at the grocery store over the weekend and the cashier kept calling the customer Jesus. As in, Jeez-us... not hey-zeus. A little kid overheard and was all beside himself... Mommy! Look! That guy is Jesus!

    It was funny.

  • She seriously stumbled and stuttered over it too.

Oh and she just hada  "HOOM-bear-toe Moe-TAA?"

All in that nasal whine battery acid voice of hers..... *stab stab stab*

    I probably would've said "Man-yoo-ell".  But I would've said "war-rez" for his last name.

  • I lived in San Francisco for a while years ago and it blew my mind at first when I heard how Jorge was pronounced. I had heard the name said Hor-hay but did not realize that was how it was spelled. I was saying George (luckily not to the person but to a coworker who knew I was fresh from Boston and corrected me).

Also Joaquin was an eye-opener. Jesus as well.

Not a Spanish origin name but Siobhan blew me away too.

Siobhan threw my mind the first time too.

Siobhan STILL blows my mind. I always have to remind myself  "Show-vahn".  And the only way I remember is that there is a post-op transgender woman on the Howard Stern Show named Siobhan.  Otherwise, I'd still be pronouncing it "Sio-ban"

  • Siobhan is an odd one. H was all confused when there was a girl named Siobhan on American Idol a few years ago. He couldn't figure out why Seacrest was saying sha-vahn when he saw her name on the screen. I had to educate him.

Georg is another good one. It took me the longest time to realize it was pronounced gay-org. I heard the name on the Sound of Music and I've seen the name in writing, but I never put them together. I thought it was a weird spelling for George.

  • The funny thing is that I had a Shivahn in my 2nd grade class.... but it was spelled that way, so when I heard how Siobhan was pronounced I was like... WHAT??!
