Re: City (of GR) dwellers
I love the recycling too, Deeder. And I'm excited that they have composting (legally) on the table.
I hope that the garbage bin charge per tip doesn't mean people stuffing their stinky garbage and holding it for weeks. I know it's only... what? 50 cents more a week, but that might make people think differently.
I just had DH take a look at the program. He also thought it made sense. He was concerned that some people would just get the largest cart and then only put it out when it was full. So then you have garbage composting for a month or so.
We have it worked out where my Dad beings us his recyclables and he takes our trash. We've done this for years now. But don't' tell it isn't the most legal thing to do.
It all looks good to me. I am in support of increased user fees for bulk item and appliance removal. The fact that these services are subsidized by taxes is nice, totally reasonable for users to chip in a bit more. And it is great that we don't have to remember to buy a special tag for it. Very efficient that they will just put it on our tab
I, too, love GR recycling. Love. Single stream rules and we have enjoyed our BOGO meals at Derby Station from collecting points. My eyes got big when I saw legit composting in our future.
I am resistant to the yard waste cart. We have a tiny city lot and having another bin that won't be used often isn't appealing to me. But I am willing to go along with it for efficiency and the safety of the collectors. Much better for them if they aren't lifting hundreds of bags.
MAMAxB - Do you live within the city of Grand Rapids or one of the surrounding communities? We live in the city of GR and our 64 gallon cart is free and picked up every 2 weeks. I know in many of the surrounding communities, recycling costs a fee.

This is a map that shows the areas GR recycling serves:

If you do live within the city limits of Grand Rapids, definitely call and get your large recycling cart and sign up for the GR city points program. You will earn points toward rewards at local business.
