How do you watch your shows?

We're thinking about getting rid of cable which got me thinking, I wonder how many people do other things..

Re: How do you watch your shows?

  • My sister got rid of cable recently and has Netflix and watches some stuff on hulu. It works for her.

My H travels for work a lot and when's he's gone I'm alone with the TV every night after DS is asleep, so I would never give it up.

  • We do not have cable, but all of my cable shows can be found online. Websites like Project Free TV are awesome.

  • We are getting ready to drop cable at our cabin (which we just use on weekends mostly).  We bought a Roku, but haven't received it yet so I don't know how it works. We aren't movie watchers at all, so I'm not sure how this is going to work out but we are going to try it. If there's no other TV, we may become movie watchers after all.
  • We dropped cable shortly after the NFL playoffs, and I really don't miss it. Most of my shows are on ABC, Fox, etc. and if I don't catch them live, I'll watch them on Hulu when I can. There's one or two shows that were on cable, but I can also find them on hulu. We bought an HDMI cable on ebay for $3 and antenna for $10, we will hook our laptops to the HDMI cable and it will stream just fine. Not worth the 60 extra dollars to me :)
  • We have the most basic cable package right now, w/o DVR.  I haven't been working so I let H watch TV in the evenings and watch all my shows streamed through Hulu Plus on the Xbox.  I love TV series, and half the excitement is watching them live and being able to discuss with friends the next day, BUT Hulu usually has them up by the next morning so I can deal w/ that.  I think it's cheaper than DVR.  I prefer Hulu to Netflix after having used both.
  • Cable (well techinically satellite Directv). DH loves all the Discovery and History channel shows which I don't think are all available online. We were just talking about this since our bill increased by $5 (and really doubled after our first year of introductory pricing $55 to $115), but we're still locked into their contract until September. On average, that's about $85 incl taxes per month for 2 years, which is a lot less than our local cable was and Directv has not had any issues with service, plus they upgraded our boxes in our first month with them to 3 HD DVRs.

  • We get all the over the air channels.  We've been without cable for 1.5 years and I don't miss it for a second.  I actually get overwhelmed when we're at hotels that offer cable TV. There are too many options!

We supplement with redbox, hulu, and netflix when network TV goes on hiatus.

  • I feel like I couldn't live without my cable, but honestly 95% of my shows are on Fox, ABC, NBC or CBS.  There are probably only 3 regular shows I watch that are on cable stations but I still DVR most of my stuff.  In fact  House, Survivor and Bones are the only shows DH and I watch live.  Everything else is DVR so we can FF commercials.

  • We have DirectTv and we have one DVR in our home.  Honestly, I wish I could drop it, but during the month of July we actually upgrade our package so that we can watch the Tour de France (on one of the sports channels not offered on our current package).  Plus, I like weird channels, like Animal Planet, that doesn't always have full length programs on their website (ie Big Cat Diaries).

It's one of those evils that we've chosen to live with--at least for now.

  • We don't have cable, never have, and I didn't grow up having it so I've never felt deprived. Although we can watch network TV, we usually always watch our shows online, mainly through Hulu, and have watched other shows on Netflix or on the network's site, such as Lifetime for watching Project Runway and Drop Dead Diva. We also have a Roku device for our TV for all those, and sometimes rent movies on Amazon.

  • We don't have cable.  We get basic channels (Fox, ABC, NBC, etc.), and if I miss a show I watch it on the network's website.

I also rely on other websites like mtv.com for shows.  They're usually posted the day after it airs.

We have Netflix Instant Streaming where we watch documentaries, older movies, and seasons of shows.

As a PP mentioned, there are other websites to watch shows also.  I've been able to find almost everything I want to watch online for free.

  • We got rid of cable 3 years ago and haven't looked back. We have an antenna and sometimes watch network TV, but mostly we watch Hulu Plus, Netflix, ESPN xbox app, and MLB.tv. Even with subscriptions to all these, we still pay wayyy less a month than we did with cable.
  • We use Boxee... it finds all of the network shows online for you.

  • Hubby and I have cable, the basic package with 99 channels, no PVR.  We are not huge TV watchers, maybe an hour or so after dinner with a glass of wine.  Our cable is bundled with our Internet and phone package.

  • For non-cable folks, are any of your DH's big sports fans? I think that is the main reason we could never cut cable. DH wouldn't ever consider not having ESPN.
