Off the beaten path NYC restaurant

My mom and I just decided to head up to New York for the day in May.  We're taking the train and planning on seeing a show (Pricilla Queen of the Desert) in the afternoon.  Our train home leaves around 9ish, and I would assume the show would be over between 4-5.

Does anyone have any off the beaten (re: non touristy) restaurant recommendations?  We've been to Becco and loved it, and Red Eye Grill.  Nothing too expensive, and leaning more toward Italian or Sushi....maybe a good American place.

Re: Off the beaten path NYC restaurant

  • I don't know anything Italian or Japanese.  But there's a wonderful French Bistro on 50th St. near 9th Ave. called Chez Napoleon.  It's an unpretentious, cozy French bistro with classic, delicious food.  It's very non-touristy and a real locals restaurant.  They serve traditional French dishes like Chicken Cordon Bleu, Beef Burgundy, Coq au Vin.  DH and I go there all the time and the food is consistently great, excellent service and not too expensive.  Hope this helps.
  • I love Five Napkin Burger on 45th St and 9th Avenue - it's my favorite burger in the entire city.

Another one in Hell's Kitchen is Eatery on 53rd Street and 9th Avenue - really good American comfort food. The mac and cheese is delish.

If you want to venture towards the Upper West Side (that's where I live), there is Celeste on 84th Street and Amsterdam - that's Italian food. It's cash only, and you are in and you are out. Service is good and food is great.

I also like Ditch Plains on 82nd and Columbus, and there is another location in the West Village on Bedford Street. (This is more seafood, though think seafood like New England style)

These are just a few off the top of my head....

Oh, one of DH's favorites is Low Country in the Village on W. 10th between Waverly and Greenwich (near the Christopher Street stop on the 1 train). This is more Carolina low country (hence the name)

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I'll take a look.

    i agree - 5 napkin burger..mmmmm!!!!

    some i enjoyed:

    fig & olive - downtown

boat basin cafe - great view

blue fin in W times square - kinda touristy but not bad and close to theatre

again close to broadway but good - ruby foos

  • We really liked this Italian restaurant, Piccolo Angolo:  http://www.piccoloangolo.com/

It is tiny though, so I would recommend making a reservation. If you're up for Spanish food, we're big fans of Malaga and go almost every time we're in NYC:  http://www.malaganyc.com/

  • Thanks for the ideas....<running off to look them up>

I've been to 5 Napkin before - delish!!!  And Blue Fin's sister restaurant in Union Square - drawing a blank on the name - is really good too.

  • If you like Greek, check out Uncle Nick's on 9th Ave (btwn 51st & 52nd Sts, I believe).  They used to have a nicer tapas bar next door, but it seems to be under renovation right now.  But Uncle Nick's is delish!
