Mauna Kea Summit Observatory Tours - Big Island
Has anyone done this tour before? I saw it on the Travel Channel and it looks awesome. It's a bit pricey so I wanted to see if anyone has gone before. We will be on the Big Island at the end of the month!
Re: Mauna Kea Summit Observatory Tours - Big Island
We considered going on one of the guided trips, then just decided to drive ourselves there. In the past, driving on Saddle Road would have voided your rental car agreement, but it has been repaved, and while twisty and roller coaster like at times, it easy to drive on. It also is not on the list of forbidden roads from the car rental place. You can drive up to the visitor station, but you cannot go further in your rental car (unless you want to void your agreement).
Guided tours will take you to the summit where the big globe shaped telescope are. You watch the sunset, eat a meal at some point, then come back down to the VS to see the stars. So really, going to the summit only lets you see the sunset b/c it is above cloud level. You can actually see the stars better down at the VS, something to do with pressure or atmosphere or something.
The VS has a free, long, slightly boring intro video to watch. Then The Star Man does a free star show outside. It is fabulous. And the guided tour people are all there too. Like PP mentioned, it ets chilly. Wear layers, bring a hat and a blanket. Either eat before you go, and pack a picnic dinner. Make sure you have a full tank of gas.
My review of it is here. IMO, going on the guided tour gets you a meal, transportation and a sunset. You see the same stars whether you DIY or go on a guided tour.
