WW-TIP-D? (TMI post - and long)

Sooooo you all know I have a Mirena, right?  Because I mention it about once a week and how much I love it?

Well, we have a problem.  You see, I had to go get the strings trimmed after insertion because my H was encountering some interference.  Last night, it happened again, and way worse.  We're talking visible irritation at the sight on the guy.  It was pitiful and he had to stop and readjust multiple times to get comfortable.

I am aware that the position of the cervix changes during your cycle and I might be "low" right now since it's normally not a huge problem.  I also don't know... can it slip down and need to be pushed back up by my dr?  I have an appointment with her next Thursday to get it checked.  I'm going to ask her to check its position and also see if she can trim the strings.  I'm scared though because when I got them trimmed the first time she said she wasn't willing to take much more off and I seriously need to lose half an inch or so based on the irritation he had.

He told me not to worry about it and when it bothers him we'll find other ways to enjoy ourselves, he said it's more important to not have to ton of hormones floating around from BCP in the interest of future attempts to make babies.  But at the same time, it breaks my frigging heart that he wasn't able to enjoy himself as much as I was.  What say TIP?  Risk the potential week off every month due to positioning, or back on to the pills?

I am saddened by this development.

  • Definitely talk to the doctor and see what she recommends before you give up on the Mirena.

But this is weird, because the strings are supposed to soften and not be poky after a certain amount of time. I've had two IUDs and with the first the doc literally cut the strings as short as possible so that they were barely there. The second one is at least half an inch maybe? I'm not sure, I'm bad about checking the strings.

  • That does suck. I'm sorry. I have no idea what to tell you and I know nothing.

Do they still sell the sponge? It would be like a little pillow to protect your H's penis.

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns
  • I'm definitely going to mention the softening strings to her.  I didn't know that was supposed to happen.  Weird.

This makes me think of the Sienfeld where Elaine was stocking up on her brand of the sponge because they were discontinued and trying to rate if her bf was "sponge worthy".  Also, it's kind of an awesome idea.

  • Buttsex.

*ponders* What about a diaphragm? Would that protect the peen like  some kind of a forcefield?

  • that really sucks. how long have you had it? when i got mine, i had to go back and get the strings cut a little, but it was fine after that. i have the paragard, not sure if the strings are different lengths.

  • The Mirena is a hormonal IUD, isn't it?

Wait, what?  You know that this doesn't make lots of sense, right?

I got it in November I believe.

I am loving this idea of building him a protective barrier.  And he would probably be ok with it.  I'll present it as a force field.

  • Can you ask her to remove the current one and replace it with a new one (and maybe have it placed higher)?
  • okay, so you've had it for awhile. i don't know what i would do except ask her to cut the string shorter.

    Yes, it is.

  • It almost sounds like the strings might have been trimmed too short...they will curl up after time and not be pokey, but if they're too short, they won't be able to do that.

It is, it's a lower dose hormone than pills.  It doesn't screw with my mind the way pills did.

  • If you are considering switching, the ring also has a lower dose than pills do.

  • I've never been able to feel my strings and my dr. has a hard time finding them too.  FI has never felt them...even when it was still new.

How would the hormones in BCPs affect the efforts of future baby making? I don't understand that.  As far as I've ever heard it doesn't affect it at all.  Mirena also has hormones...does your DH know that?

Nuva Ring made me feel crazier than BCPs did!

When I went off the pill in the past it took 6 months and a jump start med for my period to get going again, and then I had to go back on the pill to regulate.  The pill does bad things to me.  The Mirena, with the lower dosage, doesn't get in to all parts of me as badly and my doctor said she would be really surprised if I had any issues similar to that when it gets removed.

I know, I'm a medical marvel.  Honestly I just don't react well to the pill ever.  All of the ones I've tried have given me whatever side effect they claimed possible.  Everything from the dreaded dryness to mood swings to migraines.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone.  I'm becoming more and more reassured that he should not be able to feel these.

I think a little part of him feels like a big man because he can... but I'm pretty sure we both fall solidly in the average category.  So... we'll get this fixed.
