Riveria Maya Excursion/Tour Recommendations

A few weeks ago my husband and I booked a trip to the Riveria Maya for the end of May to celebrate my 30th birthday. A group of friends is also traveling with us, so I want to set up one or two excursions so that we aren't just sitting at the resort the whole time. We are all people who like to relax, but don't want to just lay on the beach or hang by the pool for five straight days.

Since you ladies are always so helpful, I thought I would check here first to see if anyone has done excursions/tours in Riveria Maya. What company did you use; how much was it; what did you do; etc?

Re: Riveria Maya Excursion/Tour Recommendations

  • We went with EdVenture Tours - ours was an entire day for I think it was $200 (for both of us). It was $75/person and you could add things. We did a tour of Tulum, snorkeling in some lagoons (2), ziplining, and another couple did a sea turtle dive. While they were diving, DH and I hung out on the beach and drank margaritas.

    They were fantastic.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • We did the one day trip to Chitchen Itza which was awesome, but I am a big history buff.  The one that was perfect (and not very far) was the day where we did half day at Tulum and half day at Xel-Ha, the eco-park. I LOVED Xel-Ha and wish we actually went all day.  The snorkeling was safe and AWESOME! Saw so much marine life without all the waves because it is in a cove.
  • Xel-Ha for sure, we had a blast, spent a whole day there, LOVED it!  Plus it's AI so that's a bonus.  Also Xcaret, same kind of thing, an eco-park with lots of things to do, snorkeling in the underground rivers was pretty cool; not AI though like Xel-Ha.

We did a tour that combined Tulum and Coba that was really awesome.  Other than the ruins which are just "okay", Tulum has the most gorgeous beach!  Coba has really cool ruins and you can climb the tallest pyramid there.  It's in a treed area which was a relief since we baked out in the open sun at Tulum...

  • We did Xlporer, a park associated with those pp's mentioned.  It was ATV's, zip-lining and rafting/swimming through caves.

We paid about $225 for the 2 of us; including lunch and transportation.  Personally, I don't know if I'd really recommend it although we had friends go after we went and they really liked it.

I have a write up about it under my "Ms Bio" > honeymoon section

I don't think you're allowed to climb the pyramid anymore Sad

  • We used The Snorkel Shop for the cenotes and snorkeling excursion. We didn't do any research beforehand - just knew that we wanted to go snorkeling but not be on a giant tour bus. Eddie was our tour guide and we had a blast - I would highly recommend them. He also took a camera and gave us a CD with photos the next day which was great.
  • I would recommend using public transportation and saving yourself a lot of money.  We stayed at the Bahian Principe and just walked out to the hwy and caught the colectivo.  It basically goes wherever you want.  We took it to access Playa Del Carmen and back twice (we also caught the ferry in Playa del Carmen over to Cozumel), Tulum ruins, Cenotes.  People are very friendly so if you are adventurous and want to meet more of the locals I would definitely suggest this over a tour bus any day!

  • We went with Alltournative and had a great time. Toured Tulum, then went biking, cenote hiking and zip-lining. The trip also included a really tasty lunch. I loved our guide and the fact that we were mostly left to explore/do what we wanted at Tulum (I get twitchy when I have to stay with a group and listen to every single explanation). I'm not a big group tour person but we had limited time in the Riviera Maya and wanted to hit some highlights; this was definitely worth it. And I would recommend the company wholeheartedly.
