Opera?

One of the things I was looking forward to on our trip to Budapest at Easter was oing to see Verdi's La Traviata at the State Opera House. Unfortunately, they rearranged the schedule before the tickets went on sale, and it won't be showing while we're there. We now have the choices of Arabella by Trauss or Wagner's Parsifal. I have never seen an opera by either (yeah, somehow Wagner just never came up), so I don't know which to choose. Any recommendations?

Re: Opera?

  • OK, so Arabella is a comedy and Parsifal is more of an epic story. Musically, I'd be leaning towards Strauss, between the two, but that's absolutely a personal thing. Strauss tends to be lighter and more melodic, whereas Wagner tends to be dramatic and less "caressing"... granted, they're both outstanding composers! I guess, pick based on what you're more in the mood for... Traviata is no comedy either so, Wagner would be more consistent with the original plan.

  • Haha! I have no idea what I'll be in the mood for when I get there! :) La Traviata was just the plan because I really want to see more Verdi.

The overview helps! However, I don't think my BF has ever been to an opera, so in your opinion, would one or the other be better for a newbie? I can always listen to both and see which one I think I'd enjoy more live, but I don't know what it would be like for someone who's never been to an opera.

  • Definitely Strauss for a newbie! Wagner might scare her away :)
  • Not to mention that Wagner's opere are averagely four hours long (some SIX!) ... I wouldn't do that to her ;)
  • Strauss it is then! ..unless I listen to Parsifal and love it for some reason! Haha!

And it's "he." Wink I was just thinking the other day that BF is an ambiguous Nest acronym. I guess instead of "boyfriend" he'll have to be "signicant other" just for clarity!

  • I'm sorry! Silly me, I assumed you meant best friend :)
  • I agree with PP.  If this is your first opera don't go to something by Wagner.  I love Wagner but he's not a very good introduction.  As the pp indicated, Parsifal is five hours in length and it's a lot to sit through if you've never been to an opera before.
  • Also, make sure you read the plot line before you go.  They'll probably have subtitles up at the opera, but they'll also probably be in Hungarian.
  • Ditto everything already said. DH is a huge opera fan but doesn't like Wagner. I saw G?tterd?mmerung (4th in the Ring Cycle) in Chicago once, though, and loved it. Still, I think Strauss would be more appropriate for an intro to opera. :-) And yeah, since the subtitles might well be in Hungarian, definitely read a good, in-depth synopsis before you go. Print it out and take it with you, too.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Thankfully I'm an expert in finding English synopses and libretto! I haven't been to an opera with supertitles that I can actually read in many years.
