Advice on buying a stove and refridgerator

We are getting ready to move to a house from an apartment and need to buy a stove and refrigerator.  I have no idea what to even look for, so I could use any general guidance before going shopping this weekend.  The local stores are Sears, HH Gregg, Lowes, Best Buy, and Home Depot.

  • Make sure you know the dimensions of the spaces so you are looking at the appropriate sizes.
  • Ditto the measurements.

Also, I assume you're in the process of buying a house... don't charge appliances or spend large amounts of cash for appliances until you close. It can jeopardize your closing.

Ditto this.  In both of our houses so far we have had weird dimensions for our refridgerator and have had to buy counter depth instead of standard.  Also if you have a Sears outlet you can get steals all the time.  They are usually scratch and dent or discontinued or returned items.  Our current fridge had a dent on the side (that was next to the wall) and that was it.  We got it for 60% off!

  • Ditto PPs on checking the dimensions and checking out if you have a Sears outlet near you. We've had outlet appliances in the past, and they were great.

Also, make sure you don't need a slide-in oven. I hadn't heard of it before buying our latest house, but that's what we had (mid-80's thing, I think -- they kind of fit in a certain space cut out of the counter, instead of just there being a whole for the oven to fill). They're a few hundred dollars more expensive than a standard range. We actually paid a contractor to hack away the extra counter space and make a space for a standard range instead of deal with buying a slide-in.

Lastly, just check the websites for their reviews on different models. We ended up buying from Sears, and they had a computer right there in the store so we could look at what we liked and look up reviews right then.

  • I would read reviews online and figure out what features you want -- refrigerators and stoves come with way more options than they used to. Personally, I've found that Home Depot seems to have the best deals. hhgregg employees will follow you around like you're on a used car lot.
  • Lowes will price match anything you find online. We've bought our last few appliances from them and have been really pleased.

Lol that is very true.  Every time I go in there I am the only person in there too.

Thanks everyone for the advice.   The kitchen is a strange set up with the area for the stove and refrigerator on a plain wall without counters.

We don't have any outlets around here.  My dad got a good deal on a refrigerator from Sears Outlet too.  It has a small dent on the side, but with the way his counters are set up you can't see it.

  • I would check with your Realtor before buying. My Realtor has a relationship with  Sears and b/c of that her clients get a discount there on appliances.
