Need vacation recommendations for group

We are trying to plan a vacation in May with my parents, brother, SIL,  and 10 month old niece to somewhere warm and not crazy expensive.  My brother's idea was to go to Riviera Maya to an all-inclusive, which would be safe and easy (given that we wouldn't have to think about cooking etc).  The problem is that I don't think we have the budget for this.  My hubby and I can only afford to spend about $1500.  The other issue is that we're all traveling from different places (us from the East Coast and my brother, SIL, and niece from Wyoming), so we need some place that's not too far for anyone.

I was thinking about renting a house somewhere to cut down on lodging costs, but not sure where to go.

This whole thing is stressing me out because there's so many variables and lots of people to consider.  Please help me out and make some good recommendations!

 Thanks!

  • Do you prefer US or outside the states? How many days do you want to go? What do you want to do?

How about renting a house in Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale or another part of FL. Florida is going to be warm in May and is typical cheap to get too and I'm sure there's plenty of condo and house rentals there. Airfare is typically pretty cheap to Florida even though airfare in general has been outrageous lately.

You may even be able to do a cruise with that budget. I cruised in May a few years ago and spend $549 a person for 7 days around the carribbean. If you don't want to do a cruise but want to do the Caribbean area, I think I saw on Travelzoo the other day that there was an AI in Punta Cana for $50 a night, and I think May was included in the deal. Something to look into... now if only airfare will cooperate :)

its a bit far for you but what about the Outer Banks - you can get amazing deals on big houses on the beach and its great for families
  • I second the cruise idea. We had a similar situation planning our family vacation last year (brother, SIL, and niece from the West Coast, parents and us on the East but in two different cities.) We talked about renting a house in Puerto Rico, but then the thought of grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning, and needing a car big enough for the whole family became overwhelming. We settled on flying into Tampa and joining a weeklong cruise to the West Caribbean. I think H and I spent about 1700 total. It was the most stress-free vacation I've had with my family.
  • i think you can probably swing an AI in RM for that amount. the bonus is that there's no additional cost for food/drinks since it's AI. that could add up fast renting a house and worrying about what wont be eaten/drank by the time you leave.

  • For my parent's 50th anniversary next year we are doing a cruise.  Ages are from 4-75 years old which is basically why we picked a cruise with 20 people.  That way, there's something for everyone from food to entertainment for all ages.  And the price is right!  I'm looking to leave from Port Canaveral for around $600-$700 pp for 7 days.  So your budget of $1500 could work minus shopping, excursions off ship and alcohol.  Honestly though, you can get it less if you go for 4-5 days or are flexible on dates.  We aren't though.  My husband and I before kids used to book a cruise less than a month out and get it with tax for $500 pp on great lines like Celebrity.
  • As long as you're willing to do an interior stateroom, there are 7-day cruises at that time for $400 on Expedia right now. With airfare for both of you, that should come in under $1500 total (if thats what you needed). Now, excursions, tipping & food would be extra. Any way you could work overtime to help save a bit more $?

If its $1500 pp you have, then you will be fine.
