I got my degree in elementary education and have been a teacher on and off for 10 years. We have had to move three times for my husband's job. Each time it was difficult to find a new job. We just moved a year ago and the only job I could find was a teacher's assistant.
I have decided I want to train for a new career and am interested in accounting. The local community college offers accounting classes that will prepare me for the CPA. I am just looking for information on what your job entails and if you like it. I am also wondering what the job outlook is like. Thanks for any input!
Re: Any accountants??
I am a CPA and currently work in corporate accounting/finance. I am the controller for the corporate office of a Fortune 500 company. My team is responsible for A/P, payroll accounting, intercompany accounting, accounting for debt and derivatives, etc. There is the generall day to day entries, reconciliations, management analysis, finacial planning. Previously, I was in audit and consolidations roles.
First, I believe that all states now require 150 hours in order to obtain a CPA (and many times there are required accounting hours as well), as well as specific experience (generally always obtained under the guidance of a CPA). I would research what the requirements are in your state before starting any program. You mention a degree in elementary education, I assume a Bachelors? Have you had any business classes? I am not sure how much sense community college classes make at this point. I would look into MS in Accounting programs. You may have to take a few prerequisites, but it would help you to quickly satisfy the education requirements.
Finally, how did you come to the decision that accounting is the way to go? I do enjoy my career choice, but it can be a very demanding career, esp if you go the public accounting route. I would encourage you to get a better feel of what accounting related jobs might interest you. Overall, I feel the outlook for accounting jobs is good, esp. if you have desireable experience (i.e. CPA, audit experience or public accounting).
I agree with the poster above. I'm a CPA and also now in corporate accounting (but not a controller). There are a LOT of opportunities that a CPA license can open up - corporate accounting, finance, tax, auditing, public accounting, governmental work, etc. and I believe the field is going to keep growing as more regulations come out.
I agree that a community college might not have the program available that will allow you to sit for the CPA exam. Last I checked, there was a 150 credit hour requirement with something like 20+ hours in accounting, and misc. other hours that were required in areas. I think I read on another CPA post recently that the requirements are changing in 2014 again? If you complete enough credits to sit for the exam... the exam is really hard and time consuming as well. There are 4 exams that have to be passed in an 18 month period. You can only take all 4 in one 3 month window but if you fail Audit in January, you can't retake it in Feb (same reporting period) you'd have to wait until April.
Anyway, I think it's a great career path and a CPA license is pretty much a "requrement" for many accounting/finance related jobs. I would look into programs in your area like a certificate in accounting at a university. When I was in undergrad, we had some people who already had other degrees come to the accounting field and get a certificate which I think let them skip the other classes that they had already taken and focus on business/accounting.
ETA: I worked for the tax department of a Big 4 firm for a year, then moved to a small local firm in the tax/audit department for 3 years and have been in corp finance for almost 2 years.
