Extra Day in Munich or Rome

So for our summer itinerary, I have one day that I can give to either Munich or Rome, and I keep going back and forth on this. We will start in Munich, do Venice & Florence in the middle and end in Rome.

For Munich, we will arrive on a Tuesday at 11:25am after an 11 hour flight. Right now, I have that Tuesday and Wednesday allotted for Munich and then we will head out first thing on Thursday morning for a train to Venice. Then on the following Wednesday, I have us arriving to Rome and then flying out at 8am on Saturday back to the States. So basically 2 days in Munich and 3 days in Rome. Would you do 3 in Munich or 4 in Rome? Thanks!

Re: Extra Day in Munich or Rome

  • We are going to Rome in September and spending 2.5 days there prior to our departure.  Honestly, I do not think that is enough time in itself.  The first day after getting off the ship we are going to acclimate ourselves and do an open bus tour.  First full day is at the Colleseum and Forum.  Second full day is at Pompeii.  I would love to have had an extra day to go the Vatican but there is no time.  Rome has so much culture, that the more days the better in my opinion.

I vote for an extra day in Rome!

  • i've been to rome 2x but never munich. since you're leaving so early from rome i say put that extra day there. or stop for a day in florence on the way from venice to rome.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Tough call, especially because you really only have 1.5 days in Munich, and the first day you will likely have jet-lag issues. However, you only have three days in Rome, which isn't a lot either. We were just in Rome during September for 4 days and didn't get to see everything we wanted. I would probably be inclined to say Rome, but I haven't yet been to Munich and I don't know if you will be able to see the highlights in 1.5 days.
  • Thanks! There's definitely more I'd like to see and do in Rome than Munich, but I'm afraid I'm going to lose more time in Munich due jet-lag. Munich /Germany was my husband's request so I don't want him too feel rushed in Munich, but I also don't want to feel rushed in Rome if we only have 3 solid days there. Decisions, decisions...
  • Honestly, I would write out a list of what you each wanted to do in each of those cities and then try to come up with a compromise from there. Are your must-sees for Munich possible within 1.5 days? When I first saw this post, my immediate thought was to add the time in Rome. However, if there are things that you will miss out on by leaving Munich too early that might not be the best thing. Realistically you can do both cities in less days and both cities can benefit from having an extra day added to it.

I only spent a day in Rome, so I only got an overview. It was one of the most amazing cities I've been to. I spent a weekend in Munich and had a great time. I had a baby at this point, though, and the trip was different. There are a lot of cool day trips from Munich, but I don't know if those are part of your must-sees and if it's worth it to you.

  • We picked Rome :) thanks for your help!
  • Two thumbs up!  I think you'll be happy w your choice.  Munich's alright, but it's sort of generic modern city, IMO.  I think Rome offers significantly more options.

  • I don't think you can go wrong with either option, two of my most favourite cities! You can never have enough time in any city so there are no bad choices here. Have a fabulous trip!
