Ladies w kids plz clear this up

When you have kids as a military member, bah is not affected whether you have 1 kid or 10 kids...  As in you get bah with dependents but it doesn't matter if you 1 dependent or 5, bah is the same.

Does the service member receive ANY additional money for having kids?

Re: Ladies w kids plz clear this up

  • Don't have kids, but the answer is no.  Your BAH is either with dependents or without.  If you have just 1 wife and 0 kids you get the same BAH as someone with 1 wife (or no wife) and 10 kids.

    Yes

    I'm curious...why do you ask?

  • You can get approved for a larger house on base with more kids, but you don't actually get additional monies.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

  • I knew that about bah but other than that do service members make extra money for having kids or dependents (other than the bah increase with dependents)?

  • BAH doesn't change, but if you're eligible for COLA I believe that does.

Also, if you're in base housing, your number of kids changes what you're eligible for.  At our location in Japan, a family had 10 kids, and technically overseas, each kid is authorized their own bedroom.  Once two units next to each other opened up, they knocked out the walls between and created a giant house for this quiverfull family.  Yeah, I kind of think there should be a limit to that sort of nuttiness.

Family separation pay when they're away but I think it's a flat rate too. Other than that....no.

  • Dude... Thank you. This is what I thought but I work with civilians not affiliated with the miltary other than they work here and there is this common misconception that service members make more money (other than bah) increase with more kids.  They give the wrong info to clients regarding that...

  • Well, if you can get the air force to basically build you a house for your giant family... someone might interpret that as taking care of your extra kids.

If you tie financial benefit to free healthcare, having more kids means you get more.

And, yes, I just looked it up.  COLA does increase per child.

  • Cola isn't relevant for the purposes of why I needed to know but it is good to know in general.

Ah, they're confusing welfare recipients with service members.  Common misconception.

Our AF base did this for a person that had 5 kids

I've had to correct like 5 people in 2 weeks.
  • I want to know how someone can afford to have 10 kids these days.

    Where's my like button now?

This has happened here. Said family has stated multiple times that they literally cannot afford to move back to the states because they "cannot survive without COLA" for their 10 kids.

Hark - I think this is relevant to your conversation OCONUS or CONUS. There are families hiding overseas and collecting COLA. I use hiding because they refuse orders stateside and the above statement is from one such family.

Let's see.  No paying for more housing, no paying for healthcare, no paying for school.  The only costs they have is food.  And with shitty food like tater tot casserole, what's the extra cost?

But daycare isn't free...right? If it is I'm doing it wrong.

And that chick (that birthed 10 kids) is a certified lunatic.

In the family we know that has that many - the older kids babysit the young ones and the mom does not work. *shrugs*

  • I guess I'm just thinking between food, clothes, things like laundry detergent, toilet paper, everyday essentials like toothbrushes and floss and shampoo/conditioner, things like school trips and sports and stuff that cost money, helping with college-  I'm not trying to judge, I just couldn't imagine 10 kids for myself with all of that!  Maybe I just spend too much on myself :)

  • I'm mostly being TIC about there not being costs to more kids.

However, since my knowledge of gigantic families comes from watching the Duggars and reading quiverfull blogs, overall costs don't seem to be a ton higher b/c they cut down on quality.  They do things like eat ramen (saw the wrapper on a recent episode) and make tater tot casserole and utilize lots of cream of crap.

Plus, bonus, no paying for school!  Certainly not for college for the girls, unless you count their weird online university that has a picture of the duggars on the home page.
