Has anyone been to the Cinque Terre? Which town is the best for a home base? We don't really care about nightlife, just great food. Any hotel recs? We like to stay in budget hotels so we can spend more money on food and drink, but I understand the area is expensive. We would like a private bath, but other than that, all we require is room for 2 adults.
Thanks!
Re: Cinque Terre
We recently visited the Cinque Terre last September and stayed in Riomaggiore, which is my personal favorite village of the five. I also think Vernazza would be a good place to stay in, although the city is currently undergoing a massive clean-up after the mudslides that occurred a few months ago.
We were supposed to stay at La Baia di Rio but due to a communication mix-up, stayed at Casa Lorenza. I have a detailed review of our visit in my blog here including how we stayed at the wrong hotel :-)
We went back in 2006 and stayed in Monterosso, and I have info and picutres in my blog. Even if you wanted nightlife there's really none to be had. There were 2 bars in Monterosso and that's about it. We had good meals in both Monterosso and Vernazza.
Also, these are Rick Steves' updates on the CT.

They had some devastating floods last fall so make sure you check carefully into what is open for business. A couple of the towns were hit pretty hard.
ETA: Didn't see that this was mentioned above. Sorry for the dup.
We stayed in Riomaggiore, and we were really happy with that town. Loved it.
We used this apt rental service and stayed in the Punta A apartment - incredible view, right over the water. Awesome.
