NOT READY!!

We are getting the call to move into our new house this afternoon, a day early.  So I am trying to finish up my homework for the week so I can pack my computer and office.  Half of our house isn't packed, but we have a month to move out of our current rental.

My problem is that DH wants to bring our bed over to the new house tomorrow and start living there and I don't feel ready.  We are renting the moving truck next weekend so most of our stuff won't come until then.  I have started making a list of things I need to take with me tomorrow:

Clothes, Bathroom stuff, toilet paper, trash bags, food, tools...

So my question is: what did you have to unpack first and start using at your new house? I don't want to make too many trips across town to get stuff I need.  Thanks for your help!

Re: NOT READY!!

  • Oh I think itd be fun to spend the 1st night there! Just pack what you would pack if you went away for a night or for the weekend. Since you aren't in a hurry to move in completely, I say just enjoy this! Order in and eat on the floor or something :)

We have our entire house packed and I'm guessing we will probably unpack our clothes (important ones for work, for the week) and our toiletries along with food that needs to be kept cold. Otherwise the rest can wait a bit. You'll have plenty of time to unpack.

  • It took us about 5 weeks to move into our current place. We didn't spend the night until we were completely moved in.

We bought the furniture we needed and didn't already have. We bought new cleaning supplies, trash cans, and other items that we wouldn't be moving from our old place. We bought some pantry staples, after eating/cleaning out the old pantry. We moved over off-season clothing, a few books, and some lesser used kitchen items.

On moving day we stripped the bed and piled up our furniture and heavy boxes (more books, dishes) in the dining room for the movers. We had them set up the furniture, we put clean sheets on the bed, and voila - we were moved in.

If you are JUST getting the keys, you might also want to do a lot of cleaning before moving your things in. Is there any painting you need to do? These things are easier without furniture.

  • The seller's realtor has a professional cleaning crew that is cleaning the house this morning, so it should be "fairly" clean for us.  But we will need to clean this week.  And DH used to be a professional painter so we are going to move in and he will paint at his leisure as we decide on colors, right now there is just the basic white the house came with.

DH just wants to start sleeping there right away before the rest of our stuff get's there next week.  So I feel like I will be living out of two houses for the next week, ugh!  But I am glad he is excited about our new house.

I would have a hard time balancing the excitement with practicality as well! Could you compromise and just spend the first night? I'm sure you're going to have a lot of last minute packing and cleaning to do.
