Here's the back story: My DH and I work in similar fields.
My DH is up for a promotion at work. The position has been advertised on the company website and he works for very large media conglomerate. DH even wrote the description for the job on the company website. He is one of the best in the business in his field and his boss loves him. He's almost certain his boss is going to offer him the job.
We found out that a former classmate got an interview for the same position. (I'll refer to him as CM) This CM took over my job at my last employer when I left for a better position with another company. I had no say in the process of hiring him, because I left before he interviewed. CM stayed on the job for about a year and then was fired for what my old boss told me was incompetence. Bear in mind it's almost impossible to get fired from this company because we were all union workers.
My DH was few year ahead of this CM and we both worked with him in projects in collage. While this CM was a very nice person, he really had no idea what he was doing in this industry, plus, we've seen his resume. CM doesn't even meet the requirements for the position. They are looking for someone with five years experience in the field. I don't even think he has one.
My question is why would a hiring manager interview someone that is obviously not qualified for the job?

I know as a Manager sometimes we have alot of individuals who clearly are not fully qualified for the position still apply anyway. In my company, we recognize that the individual wants to grow with the company and is just not happy with the bare minimum. It's almost a "good faith" interview to explain to them literally that their qualifications do not meet the requirements but you acknowledge that they want to grow.
Sure it's a waste of time for the Manager to conduct these interviews but you need to look further ahead also as a Manager.
I wonder how you found out CM got an interview, and why you're scared that he has a chance. Either you think YH "deserves" the position and is not as well qualified as you say, or you are worrying for worrying's sake. Figure out which is the right answer-it'll help YH better prepare for the interview and the outcome.
I would never waste the time on an interview of an outside candidate if my obvious choice was internal. Only the government does this, and you'd be surprised how often they actually don't have to. No private company is going to waste manhours on needless interviews.
CM told us. He contacted my DH to put in a good word to his boss for him. CM didn't even know DH was up for the job. I"m curious what part of my OP gave you the impression that I was "scared"? DH already had the interview and has been promised the promotion. The only thing he is waiting on is the formal offer, which is suppose to come today. I was just trying to give the back story. Why would a hiring manager interview someone totally unqualified that they knew they weren't going to hire?
