Places to Stay/Things to do in LA?

My DH and I are thinking about staying two nights in LA this July and then driving down to San Diego for another three or four nights.
Any suggestions for hotels/things to do in LA?
I'll take suggestions for San Diego too 
Just not sure at all about LA/different parts of the city. Thanks!

I like the La Brea Tar Pits
LA: Check out the Getty Center. We never actually went inside to see the art but the grounds and premise are absolutely beautiful with amazing architecture and foilage/flowers. It also has sweeping views of the city.
Umami Burger was delish. Got the truffle burger and it was amazing!
Jinky's Cafe in Santa Monica had some amazing breakfast!
I would recommend staying in Santa Monica if you like the beach, Hollywood/West Hollywood if you'd like to experience that scene, or Beverly Hills if you like shopping, whether window or actual.

Hollywood Bowl (great concerts)

Olvera Street
Rodeo Drive
Santa Monica Pier
Walt Disney Concert Hall
