Places to Stay/Things to do in LA?

My DH and I are thinking about staying two nights in LA this July and then driving down to San Diego for another three or four nights.

Any suggestions for hotels/things to do in LA?

I'll take suggestions for San Diego too :) Just not sure at all about LA/different parts of the city. Thanks!

Re: Places to Stay/Things to do in LA?

  • We haven't been to LA since 2005 (except for a stopover in 2010) but you can check out my blog posts here

I like the La Brea Tar Pits

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
  • We went in the summer of 2008 and did mostly touristy things:)  I can't help you with lodging because we stayed with family but while we were there we went to the Getty Museum, Griffith Observatory, Universal Studios, Hollywood for clubs, Santa Monica to the beach, and a day trip to Palm Springs for the tram.  Have fun!
  • See my review of our San Diego trip above :)

  • LA: Check out the Getty Center. We never actually went inside to see the art but the grounds and premise are absolutely beautiful with amazing architecture and foilage/flowers. It also has sweeping views of the city.

Umami Burger was delish. Got the truffle burger and it was amazing!

Jinky's Cafe in Santa Monica had some amazing breakfast!

  • I would recommend staying in Santa Monica if you like the beach, Hollywood/West Hollywood if you'd like to experience that scene, or Beverly Hills if you like shopping, whether window or actual.

    Suggested activities:
    The Getty Museum
    Grauman's Chinese Theater
    Griffith Park (hiking, etc.)
    Hollywood Bowl (great concerts)
    LACMA
    MOCA
    Olvera Street
    Rodeo Drive
    Santa Monica Pier
    Walt Disney Concert Hall

Depending on what you like to eat and what you want to spend, I can offer restaurant recs, too.

  • So much to do, but don't forget about the Hollywood walk of fame, and go to Pink's for the world's best hot dog.
